Today's the day I give #Romantasy a try. Already read the prologue, which has sucked me right in.

A couple of Pat Ingoldsby's poems

"Passing…" is from Scandal Sisters (Anna Livia Press, 1990)

"Translating…" is from Half a Hug (Willow Publications, 1998). Gleann na gCaorach is Irish for Glen or Valley of the Sheep

The beautiful photo of Pat is by Seamus Murphy, I think

Pat Ingoldsby profile photo by Seamus Murphy. He's facing the camera with a melancholy look, his eyes clear and wet. His hair and beard are white, and he wears a purple scarf and stylish dark-brown hat with a wavy red band.Passing in the Night

I'm standing outside a pub
on my own
The rock gig has just finished.
A man approaches me.
"How are you Pat?"
"I'm lonely."
"Yeah but how are things?"
"I just told you — I'm lonely."
"Ah come on Pat — how's it going?"
"How often do I have to tell you?
I'm lonely."
He looks at me and shakes his head
and walks away again.
I didn't feel quite so lonely then.Translating the Life Out of It

Gleann na gCaorach
means something beautiful.
Glenageary
means nothing at all.

"I'm fighting against Fascism. The most evil thing that's ever happened to the world."

'Couldn't keep still a minute. A bundle of nerves. He felt we'd all turn agin him when he joined the British Army, and he’d come up here on his leave and sit there trying to explain. "I'm not fighting for the British Empire, Big Jim," he'd say, twisting his fingers just like you're doing now. "I'm fighting against Fascism. The most evil thing that's ever happened to the world." Those were his very words. "I'm trying to consolidate the freedom we got for ourselves, and make it possible that, in future, other people can become free without bloodshed and bitterness." If he got drunk, and he didn’t have much to do up here only get drunk, he'd say it over and over again, almost, I...'

Lookit! Lovely indie bookshop @Sheelaghnagig has 'And The Wildness' in store! The Graces' tale is 'hilarious and profound' (Siobhán Parkinson) and 'like watching four exciting tv shows at once' (tx @bjornlarssen). What's not to love?!
p.s. @Sheelaghnagig serve lovely tea and homemade buns, as well as stocking wonderful #books. I speak from experience...

My bank holiday read is 'The Maker of Swans' by Paraic O' Donnell. I loved 'The House on Vesper Sands', so I've been looking forward to this #paraicodinnell #reading #books #irishlit #Gothic #Fantasy

A paperback edition of The Maker of Swans by Paraic O' Donnell. The cover features an interlocking image of a white Swan and a black Swan, a bit like a yin yang symbol.
