Running jmol like this solved the problem:

java -jar --add-exports=java.desktop/sun.awt.image=ALL-UNNAMED Jmol.jar

and I now have a nice clean laptop with everything working again

Neeeej. I spent hours on backup, wiping and reinstalling debian, only to find that Jmol also doesn't work on a completely fresh debian trixie (in my hands at least).

D-Wave was in the news yesterday with their quantum computer doing a 22-bit RSA cracking. 17.5 years ago I first heard about D-Wave, with their demo videos (on "Google Video") which also featured Jmol, our opensource 3D web visualization tool for molecules from the nineties :)

Just by chance, yesterday I ported an old blog post (https://chem-bla-ics.linkedchemistry.info/2007/02/17/is-that-jmol-in-that-d-wave-demo.html) where I wrote about that.

And on the same day there is the RSA news. What a wonderful coincidence :)

@cowboycatranch in many visualization tools rotating is basically rotating the camera. I wonder if #Jmol allowed to do this...
