Otesánek is a log in a Czech fairy tale that is adopted by a childless couple. The log becomes alive, and the parents are unable to keep their new son fed. Eventually, the growing Otesánek develops a taste for human flesh. Czech director Jan Švankmajer adapted it into a movie.

As far as I’m concerned the no parts of a Švankmajer film are actually silent because I can hear is my heart pounding

@rsmon77 True.. like, are you even watching a Jan Švankmajer film if you’re not sitting nearly frozen in fear of what horrors the next frame will bring ?

“Byt” AKA “The Flat” (1968) (youtu.be/pBNK4gB4QUQ?si=gwecYy) is straight up horror and features a mix of live action and stop motion. All three elements that Švankmajer would later use in films like “Alice” (1988), “Faust” (1994) and “Little Otik” (2000)

Listen you can’t have a Švankmajer film without at least one creepy thing happening, okay?

“Picknick mit Weismann” is my favorite Jan Švankmajer short ever (youtu.be/sHkcUDyZF4g?si=DBFOLg)

“Et Cetera” (1967) takes its inspiration from ancient petroglyphs and scroll art and is about the absurdity of man’s control. It’s one of Švankmajer’s few films that uses elements of traditional animation.

Our second feature is a collection of early career shorts by Jan Švankmajer (youtu.be/GWTx_r9bCdc?si=iAtR_x). Again, there aren’t any subtitles but there’s also essentially no dialogue so you don’t really need them.

And now our first feature presentation: “The Last Trick” by Czechoslovakian artist and animator Jan Švankmajer (youtu.be/ZHlF2iULcuc?si=ZF-yXg). A combination of stop motion and live action slackstick, it’s his first film.

Next, we have “Picnic with Weissmann” (1968) directed by Czech master of stop motion and mainstay Jan Švankmajer.
