Me puse a experimentar con jpg modificando el código fuente de la imagen y ver qué salía. Al principio empecé a cambiar aleatoriamente algunos bytes (al medio, cosa de no tocar los metadatos o marcadores y romper el archivo).

Luego, me puse a investigar cómo funciona este tipo de compresión de imágenes y empecé a cambiar en partes relevantes. Probé aumentando la frecuencia en algunos sectores, reduciéndola en otros. Me encanta 😍

Weird thoughts that start disturbing you once you notice them:

I usually convert my black-and-white photos I post on pixelfed to grayscale.

The usual #JPEG standard Grayscale format is 8-bit.

So today ImageMagick said "that's a 256 colour photo".

WTF? It's the new millennium, I don't use 256 colour photos these days. Why would I ever post 256 colour pho- *ooooohhhh I get it now, I'm so dumb*

Yeah, it's technically 256 shades of gray, but it *looks* pretty good. Weird how human vision works.

I ran into a weird Unicode issue with EXIF tags in a JPEG recently: the “user comment” field was in Unicode, but it was an encoding I couldn’t identify. It started with the bytes “UNICODE\0”, followed by what looked like UTF-16 (\x00 bytes interspersed with 8-bit ASCII) but no byte-order identifier (\uFEFF or \uFFFE). The thing is, Windows and various tools decode it just fine, but my code attempts to do so have all met with failure. Ideas? #photography #programming #jpeg #exif
