Many moons ago, I played with Huffman encoding in different bases. It seemed to get worse with higher bases. So I forgot about it. But I kind of wanted to try ternary again.
I found a work around for the main inefficiency, (adding a 0 frequency dummy symbol or 2 to make the top node have 3 branches) & now it seems better.🤨
in binary, A 96 symbol text of 174280 characters, compresses to 72%, but in ternary, it is 67%
