I #justfinished Ian Urbina’s Outlaw Oceans. It seems there’s a bit of controversy around the author but I think the #reportage is solid, though it does show him as an unnecessary risk taker! #ocean #environment #nonfiction #book #bookreview #bookstadon https://hollysreadingescapades.blogspot.com/2025/05/book-review-outlaw-ocean-by-ian-urbina.html?m=1
You can, you should, and if you're brave enough to start, *you will.*
(I received this a bunch of years ago at an 826 Boston gala; been waiting for the right moment to crack it open.

#JustFinished Womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase
I understood that this book was likely going to be disturbing. About 20% of the way in, it got weird. Then it got weirder. Having finished the book, I understand why it was classed as SciFi, but for a big chunk of it, I was reading paranormal horror.
The story is set in Botswana, where the author is from. It is primarily a book about misogyny and feminism, with some

I was concerned that The River has Roots wouldn’t live up to the hype. It didn’t, it SURPASSED IT. Perfection. Precise, lyrical writing creates a dream like world that embraces both magic and the mundane. #bookrecommendation #bookreview #bookstadon #justfinished https://hollysreadingescapades.blogspot.com/2025/04/book-review-river-has-roots-by-amal-el.html?m=1

#JustFinished The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz
I loved the writing mechanic used to share changes to the timeline! It made the changes clear without hitting you over the head with them.
This was a very intersectional feminist book with a lot of pondering about how we can all affect our lives and the lives of those around us in a positive manner by pushing back and sharing our views. It was a well-rounded out world with

#JustFinished The Dark Fantastic: Race and Imagination from Harry Potter to the Hunger Games by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas
This was an interesting, scholarly book about blackness in fantasy. It almost sounded like she took her thesis, made it a little more accessible, and got if published. Her conversation about Rue in The Hunger Games probably struck me the most. I was one of those people who had missed her being coded as black in the book. Thinking about it,

Some beautiful soul here recommended #SanoraBabb to me and I #justfinished Whose Names are Unknown and it was so excellent. #Thankyou! Perfect read for #womenshistorymonth as i think she wrote a better novel than Steinbeck, though her ending was kinda… abrupt. #bookreview #bookrecommendation #reading https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2b4qM8m/
#JustFinished River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar
What happens when you need to choose between love and duty? in a world where grammar is magic, maybe the answer lies in riddles. This gorgeous, lyric fairy-tale gives us the answer in song. The audiobook is just under 3 hours long and so worth listening to.
