After a week being subjected to it all day, every day, I say with confidence that broadcast television contributes heavily to the intellectual rot of this country.
No, not really earth-shattering news. But Iād forgotten just how awful it really is.
it's kinda funny. back when i was a youngster, i thought that people who didn't own a tv were kinda pretentious and weird and kinda hard to have a conversation with.
but now-a-days, i'm the weirdo because i still have my same 32" dumb tv i bought on clearance at best buy because it was dumb and not the new shiny smart, lol. and i still only use it to watch dvd's and check the local weather from my OTA antenna.
i kinda feel like i've dodged a bullet sometime in the past 20ish years, lol.
TV in hospital waiting areas is very strange. Not just because I've never willingly watched television programming for about twenty years, but because it just seems so terribly unhealthy. Considering mental health alongside physical health, TV becomes apparent as essentially fast food. Advertising; shows about buying, renovating, and selling property; the presentation of a "post-pandemic" world that is still, in fact, in a pandemic; "news" being made and sold as a product by profit-making companies; hyper competitive game shows; celebrity gossip; "reality" programmes that are in fact anything but reality... I realise I might notice it more because I've been "unplugged" for so long, but it doesn't make it less true.
