For much of her life, Sally Holt has been mystified by the things her older sister, Kathy, seems to have been born knowing. Kathy has answers for all of Sally’s questions about life, about love, and about Billy Barnes, a rising senior and local basketball star who mans the concession stand at the town pool.

The girls have been fascinated by Billy ever since he jumped off the roof in elementary school, but Billy has never shown much interest in them until the summer before Sally begins eighth grade. By then, their mutual infatuation with Billy is one of the few things the increasingly different sisters have in common. Sally spends much of that summer at the pool, watching in confusion and excitement as her sister falls deeper in love with Billy—until a tragedy leaves Sally’s life forever intertwined with his.

Opening in the early nineties and charting almost two decades of shared history and missed connections, Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance is both a breathtaking love story about two broken people who are unexplainably, inconveniently drawn to each other and a wryly astute coming-of-age tale brimming with unexpected moments of joy.

Named a Best Book of the Year by NPR and The Chicago Tribune

Heartbreaking and funny, often in the same sentence—a deeply felt, finely wrought, and highly satisfying novel. Alison Espach has created a family whose every sorrow, joy, and idiosyncrasy is utterly, vibrantly real. New York Times bestselling author Claire Lombar

82-y-o lady is annoyed that there's no books in our multi-ethnic tenement suburb's public library by two canonised Swedish writers who died 86 and 114 years ago.

Judging from a conversation last night with non friends, there may be some mystery and confusion about and the they stock, and how get paid.

Firstly, it does vary, and there is a movement to get paid per page , but for now, it's a once-off sale when they buy a .

For example, this book in the catalogue can be ordered by your local public library.

In my view of the book in Kobo, I have a library price set at $15.99 and a retail price of $9.95

Libby catalogue page for "The Book of Joy", an image of the cover, showing a green-eyed deadpan girl in dark clothes, with black hair tied in pigtails with purple ribbon. Behind her are skeletal trees, gloom, smoke, and some fires.

The page shows part of the blurb, and various buttons for notifying the patron, reading a samole, or tags.Kobo author page for the same book, showing part of thd pricing schedule for libraries, and then the start of a long list of countries and their prices

Yet to see how this pans out but hopefully it has dawned on them that if you want to improve literacy in the population then you need to invest in the libraries rather than close them all down. Save our Libraries!

And there is also an app called Libby that lets you log in and read most of the magazines available in Australia…..again, for free.

Good article by Jason Low (of Lee & Low Books) in Publishers Weekly re book banning:
"Substantial damage .....While publishers have been impacted, the cascade effect has manifested itself in diverse creators not being invited to do school visits, school purchasing decisions being frozen, and librarians not being able to perform their jobs."

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD! Remember when I said I wanted to get back into piano?? The reservation I put in for a keyboard at the library many moons ago came in today! AND I had planned on going to read at the library tomorrow! There's surely a way for me to construct some meaning out of all these random coincidences!

Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan.

Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie.

But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits. Jake had enemies, and now they're coming after Charlie. His uncle might have been a stand-up, old-fashioned kind of villain, but these are the real thing: rich, soulless predators backed by multinational corporations and venture capital.

It's up to Charlie to win the war his uncle started against a league of supervillains. But with unionized dolphins, hyper-intelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying henchperson at his side, going bad is starting to look pretty good.

In a dog-eat-dog world...be a cat.

Now a New York Times bestseller!

Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place.
