Glacier melt and its consequences
A fascinating article by the @BBC shows that the melting of Alpine glaciers can have unexpected consequences on site as well far away from the ice masses.
For her research, the author visited the Bella Vista refuge within LTER Rofental and interviewed colleagues from the LTER Austria network monitoring the glacier retreat. Read the article here: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20241213-climate-change-how-melting-alpine-glaciers-are-redrawing-europes-borders.

Parallel to other #SoilEcology project, we at the #AlpSoil_Lab of #EuracResearch started with the #SnowBed project to sample #SoilMesofauna in #alpine environment.
Late this year but it is sunny up there!

Long-term data collection + high resolution + alpine habitats + #OpenAccess = GREAT! 🥳
Our colleagues from #Eurac #AlpineEnvironment published a #DataPaper in #ScientificData with a bunch of climatic data along an elevational gradient.
The data come from an LT(S)ER area in #Vinschgau, #SouthTyrol, #italy

Despite a rainy start, the weather was quite friendly up at 2500m at #EuracResearch's #LTSER site Matsch/Mazia in #Vinschgau, #SouthTyrol, #Italy
Checked some #SoilTemp loggers for fresh #alpine soil temperature data from our (dry) grassland spots.

Many chironomid larvae are sensitive to environmental influences and their presence is an indicator of habitat quality.
An international team of scientists have now compared and combined molecular and morphological identification methods for chironomids of the genus Diamesa.
For more on this please read: Molecular and morphological characterisation of larvae of the genus Diamesa Meigen, 1835 (Diptera: Chironomidae) in Alpine streams (Ötztal Alps, Austria). https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0298367

Glacial melting leads to altered sediment transport high alpine streams, with consequences for low-lying areas. Scientists from the @unipotsdam have developed a new method to estimate future sediment transport. For further information read: Schmidt, L. K., et al. Lake Gossenkölle is an alpine lake located at 2,416 m above sea level. The University of Innsbruck is running a research station on its shores since 1975 (https://www.uibk.ac.at/fakultaeten/biologie/alpine-forschungsstaetten/gossenkoellesee.html.en). Research tasks comprise the monitoring of water parameters and studies on ecological processes and various groups of aquatic organisms and, most recently, viruses. The research site is part of the #LTER (https://deims.org/6ba80086-3ecc-4dc6-ab2f-a225003f7ba4) and #GLEON networks (https://gleon.org/lakes/gossenkoellesee)

Doing more playing in #ggplot with ice cover data from a select couple of lakes in the #NTL #LTER
Given the amazing period of record, we can explore changes in ice cover over various timesteps such as year-to-year and even decade-to-decade!! The base plot is very similar to Powers et al (2017) ... full reference in the comment below. I added a 10-year moving average and it becomes even clearer ice duration is slowly diminishing.
I've been working on a winter limnology paper for a small lake in Canada ... thankfully Northern Temperate Lakes #LTER has tons of publically available data to go through to provide some context for other lakes.
In my data analysis/viz I attempted to embrace #ggplot ... I tried but still can't embrace it, I like my #rstats base plot so much more. Here is a fun #dataviz looking at ice-on and ice-off dates for 5 different NTL LTER lakes.

Processes driving changes in sea-ice seasonality and sea-ice thickness were explored for a ‘warm-shelf’ region along the West Antarctic Peninsula using vertically coupled sea-ice-ocean thermodynamic simulations, with and without assimilated satellite sea-ice observations and moored ocean temperature observations.
