Location of the lace monitor's tree hollow... #photography #LaceMonitor #tree #location #EastCoastKin

A wide shot of trees around the Bald Knob house. One tall eucalypt has a red arrow pointing to a spot about half way up its trunk, probably 20 - 30 metres up. It's the location of a hollow limb where a lace monitor (large goanna) sleeps.

Lace Monitor in the backyard this afternoon after I put an egg on the offering rock this morning. (note the lack of egg in these photos).

(egg wasn't entirely up to human consumption, as it floated when doing the float test).

Met this handsome fellow on our walk this afternoon.

It's a Lace Monitor (colloquially also known as a Goanna).

A close up of the front half of a Lace Monitor.

This large (1.2m approx long) lizard is an adept tree climber but also very comfortable on the ground.

It had speckled skin of black with yellow dots, with yellow skin on the face. Its snout is pointed and it has tree climbing claws on its limbs. The full lizard in a patch of sun on the leaf covered path.

I've previously tooted about my meeting with two Lace Monitors, one of which hissed at me through its nose. This is the second of the two, which I haven't posted before. It was slightly smaller than the first, perhaps just a metre or so in length, and much darker. I didn't even see it until I tried to bypass the first one, and then saw this lady / fellow on a tree directly above me.

I'm pleased I managed not to freak out when I realised how close it was...

Lace Monitors are cousins of Komodo Dragons. They're mildly venomous, and have long sharp claws.

So I was a little...distracted...when I turned around after looking at a bird, and saw this >1 metre beast eyeing me from the ground a few metres away.

It climbed up this trunk and hissed at me. After I'd backed off and taken some piccies, I then noticed the other one in the tree I was standing next to...

A very large stripey lizard clings onto the side of a tree. It gazes balefully at the camera with one eye. We can see the long claws on its feet gripping the bark of the tree, which is torn in some places. The stripes go all the way down to the tips of the lizard's toes

Warm day today = goannas
This joker was standing on my drive as I arrived home from work and went up the tree as I got closer.
This particular one would have been a little under 150cm (5โ€™), but we definitely have bigger ones on the property.

And for my final #WorldLizardDay post, a trio of Lace Monitors (aka Goannas). These are the largest of the lizards I'm likely to encounter here (sometimes see one wandering through my property).

They are excellent climbers, can run very quickly, and grow up to around 1.5m long (2/3rds of that being the tail length).

Mate, you don't belong in my garage.

Visited by a lace monitor (varanus varius) about 80cm long (just a little one). Probably looking for somewhere cool to hide from the >30C heat.

Scooched it out with a broom. Took off like a rocket.

I went for a bush walk and found lots of photogenic nature including trees stretching tall toward the canopy, tree trunks, both standing and fallen, covered in moss and lichen and a bonus lace monitor.

A paddy melon crossed our path and blue wrens darted through the trees. Sadly, they all moved too quickly to be photographed.

The Brogo Firetrail into Wadbilliga National Park has finally been reopened by NPWS. Given how close it is to home, we hiked in there today to the crossroads; a round trip of just under 7km from our house.

Heard a noise outside the workshop so I went for a look. Our resident swallows were swooping this majestic fellow, who retreated to a tree when he saw me.
