On my lunchtime walk today, I spotted a Golden Whistler, and a Rufous Shrikethrush and one of the local King Parrots (who seemed to think I should have seed, but since I was out on a walk, I did not).

A sample of the ten tiny treefrogs I found this morning.

The beautiful Toolache Wallaby ( macropus greyi) , as illustrated by Henry Constantine Richter in John Gould's "Mammals of Australia", published between 1845 and 1863.

This wallaby was to be found in South Australia and Victoria. The last sighting in the wild took place in 1924, and the last Toolache Wallaby in captivity died in 1939.

#Australia #AustralianWildlife #AustralianFauna #Wallabies #ToolacheWallaby #ExtinctAnimals #JohnGould #MammalsOfAustralia #HCRichter #HenryConstantineRichter #Lithograph #ZoologicalIllustration #ScientificIllustration

The image depicts two wallabies in a natural setting. The animal in the foreground is standing upright, with its powerful hind legs and long tail visible, while the other is sitting on the ground, facing the viewer. Both have a light gray coat with a slightly darker face and a lighter underbelly. The standing wallaby has its head turned to the side, and its ears are perked up, suggesting alertness. The sitting wallaby has its head lowered, possibly grazing or resting. The background features a landscape with a body of water, distant hills, and sparse vegetation, including tall grasses and reeds. The colors are soft and naturalistic, with a muted palette of greens, grays, and blues. The text at the bottom of the image reads "Halmaturus Gregii Gray," indicating the then scientific name of the species.

Comb-crested Jacana and its reflection on the main UQ Lake last week.

A Comb-crested Jacana standing on some duckweed/algae and leaning over to eat. It is reflected in the water surface.

The bird has a white body, but dark brown wings and back of neck. There is a pale orange flush on the side of the neck and a red comb on top of its head.

White-faced Heron by the lake yesterday afternoon.

The fountain in the lake was going, but the algae and duckweed does an amazing job of smoothing out the ripples, so at the edge, the water was like a mirror.

My nemesis bird, the Pale-headed Rosella.

Extremely flighty, this one was approx 20m or so away, and still very nervous.

They usually hang around in pairs (and yes, there was a second, much closer, but hidden from me until it flew off).

Incredible #TawnyFrogmouth in our backyard - a nocturnal bird related to #nightjars. It only stretched out into this branch pose when we stepped outside as an incredible act of camouflage. Right now it’s relaxed and its breast is much puffier. #canberra #birds #AustralianWildlife

In the same tree as the Frogmouths, I also spied this female Paradise Riflebird, busily breaking bark off the tree to hunt for grubs and bugs.

Both Tawny Frogmouths were back in the same dead tree today when I went down to check the mail.
I wandered around the other side to get a better view of both of them together.

#Bird #TawnyFrogmouth #AustralianWildlife #WildOz

A pair of grey mottled owl-sized (but not owls) birds perched in a dead tree. Their feather colour and pattern blends in well with the dead wood and bark.

They have short but stout beaks that curve slightly towards the tip. They also have feathers that stick up above the beak such that when perched with their head up (as pictured) they appear to look like broken branches (from a distance).A pair of grey mottled owl-sized (but not owls) birds perched in a dead tree. Weird scene this evening. A possum apparently died caught in overhead wires. A flock of cockatoos gathered around it, screaming. They kept plucking at its tail until it fell (I didn’t capture that), then continued screaming and semi-swooping the inert body. I guess they hate possums that much. #australianwildlife

On my lunchtime walk today, I once again found one of our local Tawny Frogmouths.

Here's a wider view so you can see how it blends in.

In a practice known as guerilla rewilding some environmentally-minded landowners are reintroducing native animals to their properties, without approval. They want the rules changed so more private sanctuaries can be established. But scientists say this could have serious animal welfare consequences.

Mr Percival the Pelican, just chillin' next to the lake this morning.

#bird #AustralianWildlife #WildOz #AustralianPelican

A large bird with a very large pink bill. It is, from the front, mostly white, but when viewed from the back it has black wings and tail. Its legs and webbed feet are a blue-grey in colour.

The bird is standing on a semi-submerged log on the edge of a lake that has algae on the surface. It is early morning, and the light is soft and not yet directly on the scene.
