On my lunchtime walk today, I spotted a Golden Whistler, and a Rufous Shrikethrush and one of the local King Parrots (who seemed to think I should have seed, but since I was out on a walk, I did not).

The beautiful Toolache Wallaby ( macropus greyi) , as illustrated by Henry Constantine Richter in John Gould's "Mammals of Australia", published between 1845 and 1863.

This wallaby was to be found in South Australia and Victoria. The last sighting in the wild took place in 1924, and the last Toolache Wallaby in captivity died in 1939.

"Pie-Dish Beetles" are a uniquely Australian lineage of tenebrionid darkling beetles with a distinctly raised rim around their bodies. Victoria, Australia.

White-faced Heron by the lake yesterday afternoon.

The fountain in the lake was going, but the algae and duckweed does an amazing job of smoothing out the ripples, so at the edge, the water was like a mirror.

A very fluffy small bird with white chest and belly, brown mottled wings and head, yellowing beak and the beginnings of the yellow face-mask that they get their name from. It is standing on a lawn.

My nemesis bird, the Pale-headed Rosella.

Extremely flighty, this one was approx 20m or so away, and still very nervous.

They usually hang around in pairs (and yes, there was a second, much closer, but hidden from me until it flew off).

A striking bird in shades of brown and russet with a long curved beak. She has a faun chest and belly, with the belly having brown horizontal stripes. Her head and back are a medium brown, but she has a faun stripe through her eye. The leading edge of her wings are russet.

Both Tawny Frogmouths were back in the same dead tree today when I went down to check the mail.
I wandered around the other side to get a better view of both of them together.

A pair of grey mottled owl-sized (but not owls) birds perched in a dead tree. Their feather colour and pattern blends in well with the dead wood and bark.

They have short but stout beaks that curve slightly towards the tip. They also have feathers that stick up above the beak such that when perched with their head up (as pictured) they appear to look like broken branches (from a distance).

A wide-angle (iPhone) shot of the tree they are perched in. If you look closely you'll see both of them.

Weird scene this evening. A possum apparently died caught in overhead wires. A flock of cockatoos gathered around it, screaming. They kept plucking at its tail until it fell (I didn’t capture that), then continued screaming and semi-swooping the inert body. I guess they hate possums that much. #australianwildlife

On my lunchtime walk today, I once again found one of our local Tawny Frogmouths.
