I was reminded about my light field camera yesterday, dug it out, charged the battery, and then discovered that the Mac software doesn't run on current versions of the OS.

So, I tried on my older Mac mini running Monterey. Nope. Tried in VM running High Sierra, and Yosemite. Nope (crashed on both of those). Tried older versions of the app. No go.

Next up, I am trying a Win 7 VM. Really have to wonder why anybody would create a custom USB protocol for image transfer. Annoying.

This one is not a retro computer, but thought some might find this interesting. Up on Goodwill is a Lytro Light Field Camera. These (pretty odd) cameras were first introduced in 2011 and have the ability to capture images that you can refocus after taking the shot. Downside is low resolution, but they are still fun to play with. Current price is $25 with a few days left to bid (ends June 8). #GoodWill #auction #Lytro #PhotographyTech

I got a weird prototype Lytro.
It seems to work basically normally (but I don't have a production model to compare it with)
Also the only way to turn it off is to pull the battery which kind of sucks.

I messed around with it a bit in ADB and got to the launcher. It seems to have a lot of debug tools on (don't know if they shipped any of those on the actual Ilum or if it is even possible to get an ADB shell going on the production Ilum)

And got a picture of some Lego flowers with it.

If anyone is into Lytro stuff and wants me to try to check anything specific or try to pull stuff from it let me know.

on another note, my little #Lytro still works, even when I have to jump through a VM to get the software to run correctly and download the images. Considering it's about 10 years old and the company is defunct for a while, I think that's quite neat.

Maybe I'll try and the it's bigger sister some time in the future; there are some features locked behind that bigger sensor I want to have a play with <!!<

But nothing can beat the BRICK design of the little one.

RE: Getting my #Lytro A1 to work for the #ShittyCameraChallenge

Ug, not looking good. I need to find someone with PC. I have a M1 Mac mini and a 2012 iMac.

Software version 4 (which appears to be the latest for Mac) won’t recognize the camera, even though my computer’s do (they recognize it as a CD and a finder window pops up).

However, when I click on it, it says I need additional components which throws a nasty error if I say yes to install.

@Billthoo Update, I found a cord that charges it, and it works! But yeah, I clicked on #Lytro, and read something to that effect. The company failed in 2018, and someone was saying they stopped updating the “software”. Sounded like it was installed locally, but not sure. It’s still going to be an uphill battle…

Anybody remember #Lytro cameras? Essentially, you can adjust the depth of field after the fact.

There are no aperture settings because each shot captures all apertures, and you “choose” the aperture later via software.

A friend gave me the #LytroA1 pictured below, and I’d like to use it for the #ShittyCameraChallenge.

But… I can’t get it to charge. I didn’t get the original cable, but it’s just a micro USB. I tried a few different cords, but nada.

Photo I took of my Lytro A1. It’s a small gray rectangle 5 inches long, 2 inches high, 2 inches wide. The lens is on one end and the lcd screen on the other.

I've been dabbling with alternatives to using my phone's camera to document projects (and everything else tbh) because it's now so painful to get the pictures off of an ios device.

I've been using a floppy disk-based Sony, but now I think I want to go #lytro
