Imagination vol. 4, no. 2 (February 1953)

This is curious—not the frisbee space ships, but the fact that someone's reading about the alien invasion via a bell-jar ticker-tape machine which surely would have been antique, even in 1953?

Original magazine: archive.org/details/Imaginatio

Earth is seen from space, a bright red disk-shaped ship moving toward it, other similar ships ahead of it. In the foreground a different scene superimposed—someone is reading a ticker-tape with the words "EARTH ALERT" on it.

Worlds of IF (October 1964)

This is great, isn't it? The colours are so powerful you need a second to grasp what's going on from the reflections.

Avon Science Fiction And Fantasy Reader vol. 1, no. 2 (April 1953)

I took one look and thought ”she's a mermaid, OK” but then, no, the other guy is half-horse, which is not a thing? They're changing as they pass through the translucent thing?

Two figures pass horizontally through what looks like a pane of glass, one of them has the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse, the other the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish. A stylised depiction of some kind of structure on latticed legs is also seen.

Weird Tales vol. 34, no. 1 (June 1939)

I can't even figure out which of the stories mentioned this illustrates, but … probably not “Horror in the New York subways”? Although it is a subterranean setting.

#Currently reading #TheSupernaturalReader #Octoberween, First story: The Angel with The Purple Hair - by #HerbPaul
It was between the dark and the daylight, when the folks up about Fiftyfifth and Fifth are accustomed to stir about in a spirit of restlessness, and she came walking into the dim-lit hush-plush of the Mabuhay Club, slim and lovely in a clinging business of gold lame, and she whipped the ghost of a smile over Craig Gordon’s new dinner jacket with its fresh carnation. Then she expertly folded her wings and slid gracefully into the upholstered corner where Craig puts strangers whom he hasn’t quite sized up, and as her beautiful head went by the carnation, Craig could see that her hair was a pale purple, and he could smell that it smelled of dew on spring roses. She smiled up at him, gently, and then he decided to take a breath.

An odd #Fantasy #Romance about an angel and test pilot, that perhaps for the time period, #1950s, feels like it could have been adapted into an original Twilight Zone episode.

Imagination vol. 4, no. 5 (June 1953)

“Star Lord”, now that's a great name for the hero of a story set in space! Some kind of Guardian of the Galaxy even?

This is terrific—so much action, and the composition is tantalising. Their hands are so close but not touching.

Science Fiction Stories vol. 10, no. 4 (September 1959)

Another one where the publishers have gone "this is a bit meh, what if we invert everything?". I'm most interested in the bottom right vignette with the meeting between the human and the aliens, which is taking place in one inch of water.

New Worlds vol. 6, no. 16 (July 1952)

Rather dull compared to some of the insanity in these covers but artistic and with that kind of off-kilter composition which is apparently typical of this magazine.

Astounding vol. 43, no. 6 (August 1949)

There is a lot going on here, isn't there? This actually looks like a guy I know so it's even weirder for me, but … is he medieval? Why does he have an artist's palette on his, I want to say "tabard"? Is he wearing a wristwatch? And of course what does his ominous shadow tell us?

I don't know if my interpretation is right but the person in the foreground is wearing a different type of suit to the one in the background and that looks like a spaceship not a submarine, so maybe the ship crashed in the sea and the white-suit guy is rescuing the red-suit guy?

Creepy no. 63 (1974)

The artist chose a great angle for this, but then again if you're going to show someone being attacked by creepy dolls … which reminds me, if you don't know Jonathan Coulton's song “Creepy Doll” check it out, it's terrific.
