The water was pressurised in a pumping station at 321 High Street and supplied through thirty miles of pipes below the city's streets.

Glasgow was one of the few cities to have such a high pressure hydraulic system and it operated from the 1890s until 1964.

Can anyone confirm if this is correct? Or provide another explanation?

I've come across a few of these HOP access covers on the streets of Glasgow recently, and I've been struggling to find out what they were for.

My best guess is that they're part of an old hydraulic system which supplied high pressure (HP?) water for running lifts, presses and other machinery.

An old access cover with the letters H.O.P on it, or possibky just HP with an oval design in the middle.

In my defense, I had no idea that #ManholeCoverMonday was a thing here, or I'd have been participating long ago. Bits of artistic infrastructure fascinate me. Here's the first one I could find on my phone, on the grounds of the former #ValleyForge General Hospital, a military hospital now used for a Christian college. I'm not sure which foundry the 'W' represents – it appears to say "Contractors F[oun]dry Inc", and Phila, 1942.

A manhole cover, as they used to be called, a cover for a underground utilities. This is round, surrounded by grass. There is an interesting pattern of lines that creates almost a waffle effect – mostly continuous vertical bars, from which horizontal bars extend, but the horizontals don't quite connect with the next vertical, so it's a broken pattern. In the center is a large sans serif W, presumably representing the name of the foundry, but I haven't figured out what foundry it would have been. Below the W in much smaller letters are two lines of type. The first is "CONTRACTORSFDRYINC" where I think they have abbreviated "foundry" as "FDRY," not so unusual – so it should mean Contractors Foundry, Incorporated. Beneath that, Phila (for Philadelphia), 1942.

Access cover with the distinctive Art Nouveau logo of the Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Company on Bath Street in Glasgow.

This company was formed in 1911 and changed its name to the Automatic Electric Company in 1932, making this cover between 91 and 112 years old.

It's only the second such cover I've come across on the streets of Glasgow (but I'm sure there must be more out there!).

A while ago I posted the logo of the Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Company (formed in 1911) which I found on a manhole cover in Broomhill. Today, I found one in Scotstoun with the very similar logo of the Automatic Telephone and Electric Company, which ATM became in 1936. These are the only two such manhole covers I've found in Glasgow so far.
