I haven’t been posting much about my trip, but #Philadelphia has far exceeded my expectations. Hanging out in a small town near #ValleyForge after a fantastic morning of exploring more history, and noting that #Pennsylvania is making a great impression, overall! P.S. the #Phillies game last night was LIT!

Finally got back out for a paddle today – haven't gotten out enough this summer, will try to do some more. We live in an area with no lakes so you have to watch the levels and flow in the river. Today there was plenty of water but the current was easy.

View of the Schuylkill River, with the bow of a white kayak along the left side of the view. The river, lightly rippled and brightly reflecting the sky, runs off to the right, and a treeline beneath a lightly cloudy sky crosses the view just above the halfway point.A wavy looking photograph of the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania, looking straight up a long straight portion of the river, leafy trees on banks on both sides, and some fluffy clouds in the very blue sky.

Valley Forge was the winter encampment of the Continental Army from 19 December 1777 until 18 June 1778, during one of the most difficult winters of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). #History #ValleyForge #AmericanRevolution #ContinentalArmy #HistoryFacts worldhistory.org/Valley_Forge/

— old farmstead at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. (It's a terrific place to visit — lots of historical significance, a terrific visitors center with interesting interpretive displays — and great trails for running, bike riding, dog walking, etc.)

Have a good day.

Photo: On the right, an old stone home with chimneys at either end and a brown roof, separated from some sort of white outbuilding with a single chimney that is farther in the background toward the left. A few dark green pine trees are at the middle of the scene. Several deciduous trees are just beginning to sprout leaves — three such trees are most prominent. The ground is covered with light green grass, and rolls gently away. The sky is bright blue and striped with clouds. Shadows from the trees gently dapple the sunlit grass.

A break in the rain and clouds (the winter's been warm though) got me out for my first real #BikeRide of the year – a quick run along the #SchuylkillRiverTrail to #ValleyForge. There are two old train stations in the park, one fabulously restored and open to the public, and the other, not so much. I'm at the other.

A selfie of the author in front of the abandoned and decrepit Valley Forge Park rail station. I am on the left of the picture, looking fully into the camera, wearing a bicycle helmet (with a wind cover on top), dark sunglasses, as much of a smile as I ever muster in selfies, a few days' worth of beard stubble. There is a gray gaiter around my neck and a bright yellow jacket below. Behind me is the gable end of the abandoned Valley Forge Park railroad station, a half-timber building with bare painted brick on the first story and stucco above. There are large doors that appear to be on trolley hangers; above the doors is an old blue highway-style sign that reads "Valley Forge Park."

1/2 #HeatherCoxRichardson:
“The insurrectionists at the Capitol were not patriots. They were trying to overthrow the government in order to take away the right at the center of American democracy: our right to determine our own destiny. Commemorating them as heroes is the 21st century’s version of erecting Confederate statues.”
