4/ #TikTok: TikTok works for me because, like Facebook, I am specifically intentional about what I use it for. TikTok is where I seek out and listen to #MarginalizedVoices. I am constantly adding creators there who are #Black, #disabled, #Indigenous, #gay / #trans, #autistic people, so the TikTok algorithm tends to also serve me similar content. I donโt see any hate unless one of my creators is putting their spin on it.
Also, since Iโm so focused with what Iโm there for, the obnoxious ads that do pop up are extremely easy to spot and swiftly ignore. I keep my number of follows low-ish, too, so I see things mostly chronologically. Another fun aspect is that one of my children is in TikTok and loves to send me vids that interest them. So itโs been a nice way to build our connection.
I continue to learn a lot about the nuances of communities I donโt belong to, and I can credit TikTok with my own personal discovery that I have a multitude of autistic traits and that I am #bigender. Keeping it focused works great for me.
