In Poland on the first day of spring we drown Marzanna, a representation of winter. Usually it's a doll made of stick, straw and dekorated with paper ribbons, and really colorful. My version is more environmentally friendly, made from whatever was already growing at the river bank. So she's not the prittiest, I know 😅

Marzanna [maˈʒãnːa], the Goddess of Winter and Death.

In Poland, on the first day of spring we make a doll of her, burn her and drown in a river to repel her power. Very important in order to keep the weather warm and plants growing! Here she's not burned just yet 🔥 :bunhdowo:

Drawing of a hay doll on a stick. She is smiling, and has her cheeks embroidered in pink. She has a jute dress, multiple scarves tied around her neck and a red scarf on her head. Red ribbons are tied around her arms and waist. There are many flowers put behind folds and edges of her clothes, and a flower wreath is hanged on her shoulders. In the background there is a meadow full of spring flowers and blooming bushes. The light is warm and soft.

Drowning and burning of Marzanna
Celebrated around March 21st (first day of spring) or on the 4th Sunday of the Lents before Easter, the custom of burning of Marzanna symbolizes the departure of winter and is rooted in pre-Christian Slavic rites that were performed to summon the spring. Originally it was celebrated during the spring equinox as a religious feast of the Slavic pagans, and it survived over the last thousand years despite the huge impact of Christianity and countless efforts of erasing that custom from the Polish countryside.
