On 22 January 1979, the “winter of discontent” peaked as a day of action was held by public sector #unions in the UK and 1.5 million workers struck against pay restraint in the high inflation. the largest stoppage of labour since the 1926 #GeneralStrike.
Many workers stayed on #strike beyond that day and eventually won big pay increases, like refuse workers and gravediggers.
