Bristol, Abbot's Gatehouse c. 1170

These are certainly what are known as 'beakheads' in Romanesque/Norman carvings but I've never seen ones with what look like antlers, making them more akin to moose. Beautiful whatever they represent. Appreciated by @CathyRosamundLowe as well.

Stone carving in yellowish sandstone, with three heads with antlers, bulging eyes and long noses. In between them are decorative swags, the top part of which bears small holes and the bottom rather pendulous.

If you like learning about medieval life, I greatly suggest the books by Frances and Joseph Gies.

The books might be a bit old, but they tend to cover details that many books skip over (medieval women, for example).

The wonderful 14th century octagon tower at Ely Cathedral. As the height and width would not have supported a stone vault, the tower was constructed in wood following the collapse of the central Norman tower in 1322. ๐Ÿ“ธ My own.

Stunning Southwell Minster, Nottinghamshire was mostly built in the first half of the 12th C in Romanesque style, replacing a 10th C church. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13th C. A cathedral of the Church of England since the late 19th C. Popped in while visiting nearby family. #MedievalMonday

The photograph is taken from the south west of the exterior of the magnificent west end with twin towers and many Romanesque features such as round-arched doorway and windows. Parts of the south elevation of the nave are visible with aisle and clerestory. The light honey coloured stone glows in the sunshine against a blue and white summer sky.
