Oh, hello!

#nzBird #birds #ruru

A ruru inside a nest box looking at the camera. The picture is low resolution and blue/black due to the infrared camera.

Are we going to move in or not?

Night vision (infrared) screen grab of 2 ruru sitting on a branch in a bush setting and both looking cheekily towards a large nest box mounted on a tree to the right. Their eyes are reflecting the light which makes it appear somewhat comical

Question for #aoteoroa #nzBird nerds:
I'm trying to detect #ruru calls from an audio stream so that I can identify camera footage to review.
I'm using Frigate for visual object detection with little success so far.
The Frigate audio detection works much better for a variety of sounds, just not so well for ruru (since it wouldn't have been included in the training set and sounds quite different from other birds, owls, etc.).

Is there a (free) software/model I can use that might work better?

Sample clip from last night youtube.com/watch?v=gifDxEebWl

*1 Frigate audio detection uses tensorflow.org/hub/tutorials/y which is trained on research.google.com/audioset/

IR (night vision) photo of 2 ruru at a nest box with one sitting on the perch and the other inside the entrance, boch looking at the camer with their eyes reflecting the lights.

The South Island robin is one of New Zealand’s most inquisitive native birds — often hopping right up to you and landing on you.
Their bold nature and friendly behaviour make them a favourite among trampers and photographers alike. It’s always a privilege to share a quiet moment with one of these amazing birds.💚

A small South Island robin stands alert on the forest floor, surrounded by lush greenery in Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand. The bird has soft charcoal-grey plumage, a pale yellowish-white belly, and a distinctive white spot just above its beak. It’s perched on a damp log covered in tiny bits of bark and moss. Behind it, large fern fronds arch , their textured leaves adding depth and a sense of wild, untamed forest. The lighting is soft and natural, giving the whole scene a peaceful, earthy feel.
