#NationalMothWeek

Closed out #NationalMothWeek with a great night at Pakim Pond, led by
@SarahMackAttack

We saw all sorts of things - carnivorous plants, bats, leopard slugs, and, of course, moths!

Pakim Pond, in the gloaming, with the fading light in the distance, between the trees.Ailanthus webworm, from the ermine moth family.Perched on a small clutch of oak leaves, we see a male Imperial moth facing a female Imperial moth. They are banana yellow, with purple splotches.

It’s National Moth Week, July 20-28, to celebrate the beauty, lifecycles and habitat of moths, so I’m reposting my eclipse of moths (the delightful term of venery for a group of moths) and also for my #InsertAnInvert2024 wildcard week.

This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctural moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), 🧵1/

#moths #NationalMothWeek #sciArt #eclipse #moon #LunaMoth #TigerMoth #Hawkmoth

My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta).

In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.

A favourite for #NationalMothWeek -This is a hand-printed lino block print of the charming Hummingbird Clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms. The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee. 🧵1/n

My linocut print of a hovering hummingbird clearwing moth above a branch of cherry blossoms on ivory Japanese kozo paper, 8” x 8”. The moth has an olive coloured head, burgundy back and wings (with transparent windows), black elsewhere including eye, and antennae. The branch is brown with pink/purple and white blossoms.

For #NationalMothWeek:
Gisbert Combaz (Belgium, 1869–1941)
Orchids and an Emperor #Moth, 1912
Pen & black ink & watercolor, on buff paper laid down on board; H 44.6 cm (17.5 in) x W 59.3 cm (23.3 in)

"This large watercolour was executed in 1912 and is signed with the artist’s late monogram. During this period Gisbert Combaz was consistently producing works with a pronounced Oriental influence, reminiscent in style of his work from before the turn of the century. The painterly style of these large-scale floral watercolours stylistically mirrors such posters of the same period as one for the exhibition in Charleroi Les art anciens du Hainaut, Salon d’art moderne, published in 1911." info via https://www.stephenongpin.com/object/791200/0/orchids-and-an-emperor-moth

watercolor painting of an apple tree trunk and roots surrounded by various flowers, moss, lichen, and fungi, with an owl perched on a low-hanging branch and two moths resting on the tree below it
"To create her fantastic natural scenes she often acquired and actually lived with the animals or preserved specimens. She would spend dozens of hours sitting before the little bit of landscape which embraced those animals, scrutinizing every aspect, and then would patiently capture in her own unique style."

Leaf mine of the Poison Ivy Leafminer Moth (Cameraria guttifinitella) for #NationalMothWeek. I'm curious to try rearing an adult from a mine but I've had enough experience with poison ivy to be hesitant.

Reticulated fruitworm moth (Cenopis reticulatana). The beak-like structure that extends beyond the head is composed of the labial palpi, sensory organs that have a long list of abilities including detection of CO2. Females tend to have larger palps, and I gather that that might be because they are the ones who use CO2 to assess host plant quality during oviposition. #tortricidae #moth #moths #mothtodon #mothing #lepidoptera #insects #entomology #nature #NationalMothWeek

Here's a lesser maple spanworm from last weekend's moth night. BugGuide says that the Latin binomial, Macaria pustularia, references the puss-like markings along the forewing. #moth #moths #mothtodon #mothing #lepidoptera #insects #entomology #nature #NationalMothWeek

Bats use ultrasonic pulses to detect moths, but not all moths are defenceless. Some emit ultrasonic signals of their own to startle bats and chase them away floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/ #NationalMothWeek

Apparently it's national moth week - who knew?! Unclear exactly which nation it's "national" to though! #NationalMothWeek #NMW
