Carney’s deputy minister shuffle could show that he's serious
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/bryan-brulotte-carneys-deputy-minister-shuffle-could-show-that-hes-serious
"The appointment of Michael Sabia as Clerk of the Privy Council earlier this year was an unmistakable assertion of authority over the public service because Sabia is not a process manager or a consensus broker. He is an execution driven institutional reformer with a record of imposing discipline, demanding results, and aligning large bureaucracies with clear political direction."
Trade talks and Guilbeault's future: Carney’s end-of-year interviews (in French)

Somewhat interesting, nothing really surprising.
#TashaKheiriddin: The Conservatives who could replace Pierre Poilievre
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/the-conservatives-who-could-replace-pierre-poilievre
She lists
* #JamilJivani (caucus)
* #JasonKenney (former Harper minister, premier)
* #MarkMulroney (Bay Street)
* #DougFord (premier)
If any of these people are positioning themselves for a run, then we'll see in Calgary, in a month and a half.
After second floor-crossing, Conservatives brace for more defections
https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/as-the-floor-crossing-dust-settles-conservatives-are-bracing-for-more-defections
"“I expect two more, at least,” one Conservative caucus member told National Post."
The article suggests it's more a question of Mr. Poilievre's mismanagement of caucus than of Liberal incentives. Depressing, if true.

Carney's new face for Quebec has a long history of being unpredictable
https://nationalpost.com/news/joel-lightbound-carneys-new-pick-as-quebec-lieutenant-has-a-long-history-of-being-unpredictable
Unpredictability is a desirable quality for an MP in Canada's leader-dominated Parliament. #JoëlLightbound will have to keep it within cabinet to succeed as a minister.
Good luck to him with his new job.
#AndréPratte: How Pablo Rodriguez lost control of the Quebec Liberals
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/andre-pratte-how-pablo-rodriguez-lost-control-of-the-quebec-liberals
"Four investigations are now underway: in addition to the retired judge hired by the Quebec Liberal Party, the National Assembly’s ethics commissioner, Elections Quebec, and, we have now learned, Quebec’s anti-corruption police unit are looking into the matter. Meanwhile, investigative reporters are digging deeper, uncovering new details almost daily."
"One interesting thing about being middle-aged at the moment of the AI pivot is that I worry about not adapting to AI quickly enough. I wonder if anybody else ever feels this way, ever feels all at once how they’ve already lived through several sequential lurches in techno-history."

Shopify CEO calls out Liberals' 'toxic' foreign tech subsidies
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/shopify-ceo-calls-out-liberals-toxic-foreign-tech-subsidies
" I spent a lot of time explaining to civil servants in Ottawa that it’s not good for our economy that American and overseas branch offices can employ Canadians at half the cost to all the Canadian companies around them due to these subsidies.…"
"When asked by someone on X why he doesn’t just move Shopify to the U.S., he replied, “because I like Canada.”"

House likely to trade MP desks for benches in restored Centre Block
https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/house-of-commons-likely-to-trade-mp-desks-for-benches-in-restored-centre-block
The issue is that there won't be enough room for desks if the House of Commons grows to 400 MPs. Benches are good enough for the UK, so they're good enough for us, in my opinion.
(The article goes into more detail about the renovations of Centre Block.)
Quebec minister hints at tabling 'secularism 2.0' bill in coming days
https://nationalpost.com/news/local-news/quebec-new-secularism-law-roberge/wcm/402be733-e02a-416b-9cb4-d92a84827ec2
If Québec really does adopt a new #secularism (#laïcité) law, then I hope the archbishop of #Montréal leads public prayers in Place d'Armes and accepts the consequences of the law.
As general rules, people should not be forced into religious practice; religious activities should not obstruct the public in their affairs; but #religion should not be chased out of the public square.
Deal creates 'necessary conditions' for pipeline not guarantee: Carney
https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/alberta-deal-will-create-necessary-conditions-for-potential-pipeline-to-b-c-not-a-guarantee-carney
To me, it sounds like PM Carney is taking the right position regarding a new pipeline: the feds should remove the rules making it impossible, but not pay for it.
"However, at least two of [Mr. Poilievre’s] MPs, who spoke to reporters that afternoon, suggested a closer look would be needed at the Ottawa-Alberta deal first. “Devil’s always in the details,” said Alberta MP David Bexte."
Toronto's nightmare is neighbourhood shops and cafés: Selley
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/chris-selley-torontos-nightmare-is-apparently-neighbourhood-shops-and-cafes
"The idea now is to let people open neighbourhood stores again. The uninitiated might ask what sort of city would stand in the way of such things to begin with. Who’s against convenience stores? They’re convenient! Who’s against a local coffee shop where you can catch up with the neighbours (and complain about the area’s “new element”)?"

Liberals propose bill to streamline, pre-approve high-speed rail line
https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/liberals-propose-bill-to-streamline-pre-approve-toronto-quebec-city-high-speed-rail-line
"Ika, who has spent his career studying large-scale projects and their failings, said there is no doubt that Canada’s approval process for major projects is so cumbersome and time-consuming that it leads to long delays and inflated costs. But that doesn’t mean the government can forego consultations and reviews completely, particularly with Indigenous communities, he cautioned."
The #CAQ plans to enact a Constitution for #Québec which is in flagrant contradiction with the Constitution of Canada. This article points out some of the problems:

Time for disallowance?
“It is clear that our security relationship … is too focused on the United States. We must diversify,” [#MarkCarney] said in March, just days after being sworn in. “Given the need for value for money, given the possibility of having substantial production of alternative aircraft in Canada … it’s prudent and in the interest of Canada to review those options.”
