#NationalTreeWeek

We ended #NationalTreeWeek yesterday with live music by Jol Rose and Rachael Birkin, and visitors decorated leaves to hang on our mulberry tree.

We run this free #familyfriendly event on the first Sunday in December to mark the end of National Tree Week--an annual celebration to mark the start of the #winter tree planting season.

Back in March of this year, one of our volunteers was lucky enough to be able to enter the usually-locked grounds of Holy Rood Church as council workers were undertaking some repairs (yay to lucky timing, boo to vandalism), and took this shot of the Jefferies family memorial, shaded by a tree.

Here are a few shots from Tree Days past - our main activity is making leaves to hang on our trees (thank goodness the mulberry is still standing), with live music playing all the while.

This Sunday, we have Rachael Birkin and Jol Rose entertaining us in the parlour. You can keep warm and refuel with cakes and hot drinks from our cafe. It's a peaceful and uplifting way to spend some time on a Sunday afternoon. We'll be open 1-3pm.

Decorating leaves made of card in the parlour, this activity prompts thinking about what trees do for us. The leaves are then cut out and hung on the bare branches of the museum's mulberry tree.A child in a snowman beanie hangs a leaf made of card on a bare branch of the mulberry tree. The mulberry tree has lost all its leaves in winter, and on Tree Day (the first Sunday in December), we decorate leaves made of card and hang them on bare branches, thanking the trees for all they do for us.

What a start to #NationalTreeWeek ! #StormBert has fatally damaged a number of trees in our copse, and taken the ladder (pictured) with it.

The ladder is dead, long live the ladder.

(Our copse is therefore off-limits till the council can come and take down all the broken trees.)

A ladder made from branches, suspended between two trees with wire. A piece of 3D art you wouldn't spot unless you look up! But Storm Bert has sadly destroyed it.

I stand neither in the wilderness
nor fairyland

but in the fold
of a green hill

the tilt from one parish

The Wishing Tree
Kathleen Jamie

I stand neither in the wilderness
nor fairyland

but in the fold
of a green hill

the tilt from one parish
into another.

To look at me
through a smirr of rain

is to taste the iron
in your own blood

because I hoard
the common currency

of longing: each wish
each secret assignation.

My limbs lift, scabbed
with greenish coinsI draw into my slow wood
fleur-de-lys, the enthroned Britannia.

Behind me, the land
reaches towards the Atlantic.

And though I’m poisoned
choking on the small change

of human hope,
daily beaten into me

look: I am still alive –
in fact, in bud.
