The National Biodiversity Network Trust is a shining light in species recording and one thing in which Britain excels.
They have collected a vast store of citizen science observations, which point to morphology change, spread, inter species dependencies and much besides.
Crucially, if you don't know what you have (and where and why) you lack the evidence to be able to protect it.
One of the weaknesses is that species confirmation by experts is very unevenly spread. Spider reports are notorious for not being verified. So I was delighted today to have two spider records confirmed.
They are both for the same species of Opilio.
The species canestrinii was first seen in the UK in 1999 and has spread quickly. Verification will paint a much more accurate picture.
