<p>As I write this, AI bots are crawling the website of Rappler (and other news companies) to scrape for content that they can use to feed and fatten themselves. They do this without asking permission, paying a fee, or giving a damn. </p>

<p>If you’re a news manager today and are not aware of this, that’s a problem. If you’re a habitual reader of news who trusts journalists and their work — and you’re not aware of this, that’s a bigger problem.</p>

<p>Let me tell you why.</p>

<p>Imagine a world that serves you information that could not be traced to its original source. Tough ask, right? </p>

<p>After all, we’re by nature obsessed with sourcing, and I don’t mean simply sourcing information or news but just about anything — knowing the source of what we eat, what we use, what we wear. Made in China? Hmmmm. <em>Longganisa</em> from Vigan? Of course.</p>

<p>The thing with AI is it’s like walking into a shopping store that serves everything you want and need, except it does not say where, when, or how they’re made. Ah, but you will know at least who made it; it can be OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Google and all their cousins and dummies.</p>

<p>Pause for a moment and translate this to news, the kind that, in the past, you could trace to someone who gathered it, verified it, and made it accessible to you. You likely have not noticed it yet, but these days you’re now swimming in a sea of news stories that are synthesized in small chunks and you bel
