On our way back to the ship after visiting the Borgund stave church in 2013 we took the snaking mountain road route instead of the tunnel and this gave us the opportunity to stop at Stegastein, a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Aurlandsfjord and the village of Aurlandsvangen, which we'd also stop in afterwards. The weather wasn't wonderful with a steady, cold rain that soaked us and washed out the distant views along the fjord, but it was very atmospheric and a great sight.

A mountain viewing point looking out over the tree-filled hillside down to a fjord that curves from the bottom left up towards the centre. On either side of it great, sheer, lumpy mountainsides form a barrier that disappears both under the low cloud and into a deep rainy mist that washes out the most distant view. It's a cold, damp scene with the only colour coming from the trees we're above and at the very edge of the grey fjord water a hundred or more metres below where houses can be seen lining the road.
