Levels of equality and freedom have come and gone, and maybe European patriarchal society isn't the apex.

Read this one.

Democracy at the apex. But we learned that evolution is a collection of paths through a forest, sometimes heading where we want to go and sometimes not. Mutuations are random and not always more beneficial. Thus, species don't always progress with change.

They posit the same for human history. We haven't been heading in a direct line to where we are, and we don't have to stay here.

#JustFinished The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity by David Graeber and David Wengrow.

This was a great book! Graeber and Wengrow integrate new archeological discoveries with anthropology and turn common belief on its side. In the same way that we used to think that evolution was a progressive march to new and improved species, we also thought that human development was on an upward arc to better things, with capitalism and

Today, I started reading How to Hide an Empire by Daniel Immerwahr. I will admit that I'm a bit raw because my sister is in the hospital, but JFC, this is brutal!

Between what we weren't told as kids and details on things that we were sort of told, it's incredibly informative and interesting, but I can't stop crying about things in it.

Like, I never knew the Philippines had been an American territory.

QOTD: The Goddess of Ick

"Many times, we cling to toxic relationships because being a victim seems like the lesser of two evils. We feel like we are just trying to hang on, to survive. But we cannot discover what we are capable of until we let go and settle into the world, changed by other people's actions."

Started reading We are not Broken by George M. Johnson last night, and I'm practically halfway through. It's a memoir, and it's just a great read. I'll probably finish tonight. Granted, it's #YoungAdult #nonfic. Still!

Photo of the cover of We are not Broken. Against a black background are five painted portraits. The main portrait is of the author as a boy with s crown of flowers on his head.

Just finished reading FINISH by Jon Acuff and highly recommend! Lots of great tools to help w/ perfectionism and brain weasels at different stages of a project. (In my case, about 90% to the end of my current novel WIP.)

@chrisvolion Luckily I was in—I think it was Group 49: Historical Fiction/Fury/Rags to Riches. I was very happy with my submission. But oh man, if I advance and am assigned anything in the fantasy, sci fi, speculative genres, I am beyond screwed. Outside of #ChildrensLit I am purely a #NonFic fan.

My two-year-old is looking through the Weetabix children's encyclopedia I had when I was a kid and it's blowing my mind. She is THRILLED by what's what surprises her on each page. Also, she identified an octopus as a snail, which is just clever. #NonFic #NonFiction #ChildrensbBookstagram #ChildrensBooks

Just finished reading "Amateur" by Thomas Page McBee, an autobiographical book by/about a trans man who starts boxing and thinking about masculinity and what it means to be a man.

Not as enlightening as I had hoped, but still a very nice read and some food for thought. I don't think I will do a summary of the book, but I'll make a collection of my favourite passages or somesuch.
