Premier Smith has repeatedly said the Legislature needs to have and use the #NotWithStanding clause because *they* are “accountable” to Albertans. I am glad to hear LaGrange’s constituents are working to hold her to account for their terrible laws.

Cutting court backlogs by … abolishing a human right, honoured since Magna Carta.
From a government that just released thousands from prison because there's no room for those already convicted.
And Canadian governments are using the ludicrously named #notwithstanding clause to suspend its Charter of Rights and Freedoms
My friends, we have to fight this battle for our rights all over again.
Way to go Alberta!
Recall petitions underway for:
Rajan Sawhney (Calgary-North West), - Minister of Indigenous Relations

RJ Sigurdson (Highwood) - Minster of Agriculture and Irrigation
Ric McIver (Calgary-Hays) - House Speaker
Muhammad Yaseen (Calgary-North) - Associate Minister of Multiculturalism
Demetrios Nicolaides (Calgary-Bow) - Minister of Education and Childcare
Nolan Dyck (Grande Prairie) - Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous and Rural Policing
Angela Pitt (Airdrie-East) - Deputy Speaker
Sign a petition if you are in one of these ridings, volunteer to collect signatures, or start a new one! Smith has defended the use of the #NotWithStanding clause on the grounds that legislatures are accountable to the people, let’s show them what accountable means…
… keep up the good work!
The #UCP gov of Alberta claims the #NotWithStanding clause was put there to prevent judicial over-reach. They have that exactly wrong and backwards:
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms was formulated precisely to prevent bigoted numpties from trampling all over the fundamental rights of unpopular minorities in int name of the majority, and the clause is there only because the bigots of the day wouldn’t have let it pass without a loophole.
They claim that in using the notwithstanding clause they are maintaining the ‘supremacy of the legislatures’ because they are ‘accountable’ to the electorate… great: let’s hold them to account.
Sign a recall petition if there is one in your riding, and if there isn’t - consider starting one. And as they show themselves to be too thin-skinned for so much ‘accountability’, be ready to hit the streets and show them what true accountability looks like.

#UCP :
The #NotWithStanding clause is part of the law, we have every right to use use it as we see fit.
also UCP :
The #RecallLaw that we passed wasn’t meant to be used *that* way, you can’t do that!
Smith claimed that “an overwhelming majority of Albertans” supported the three policies targeting trans people.
This is not true, but even if it were true it is precisely the reason that we have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the first place: to prevent a minority from being targeted and persecuted by a hostile majority.
The concept of rights are meaningless if they are not universal expressions of the inherent value of life protected principles by reciprocity, justice, and fairness.
#IDoStandWithTrans people in Alberta, not the #UCP government

"Smith says she's concerned such petition drives aren't using the legislation in good faith but instead are trying to overthrow her government."
This is rich, especially coming from the cow who thinks using the #notwithstanding clause to deny people their rights, is acceptable. The #UCP party is essentially the Canadian Republican party and we need to get them out of governmental power ASAP!!!
Four #Alberta legal associations protest #UCP #DanielleSmith abuse of the #NotWithstanding clause to deny basic #HumanRights of #Albertans
I encourage every Albertan (and Canadian really) to listen to what UCP MLAs have to say about the notwithstanding clause, it boils down to something very simple:
We support the Canadian Constitution, and that includes the notwithstanding clause, because we believe those rights were never actually meant to be for everybody. We’ll be the judge of who gets rights and who doesn’t.
Their position really is that simple: rights aren’t for everyone.
And that’s why *every* Albertan - every Canadian - should be working to get these people and their ideological cousins (in Ottawa and elsewhere) out of office and as far from any influence in society as possible as quickly as possible.
Energi Media and Dr Brat point out #daniellesmith and #UCP declare an emergency, use #Notwithstanding clause to force #teachers back to work and #daniellesmith runs away from #Alberta!
thank you Canadian Bar Association #CBA for speaking out about this #UCP #DanielleSmith flagrant abuse of the #Constitution #NotWithstanding clause!

A word to organized labour in Alberta and beyond:
The last time there was a general strike in Canada, it wasn’t the result of months of talks and careful planning, it followed a steadily worsening situation, only a few weeks of individual separate strikes, and then coalesced within hours but lasted six weeks.
Don’t waste the movement that is happening, when people are ready to move, your job as organizers is to help them move in productive and coordinated ways, not to stop their movement.
Very disappointed by today’s ‘announcement’ by Gil McGowan representing the AFL and the Common Front.
Alberta needs action and needs action NOW.
Not just conversations, not just talk.
Maybe a general strike can’t happen this week, but *something* needs to happen this week, and something as big or bigger than has happened yet.
McGowan spoke about ‘using all the tolls at their disposal’ - our biggest asset right now is A LOT of people who are very angry, upset, and ready to take a hit to express that and THAT is the the most valuable tool at their disposal.
I hope enough people express their dismay and disappointment that McGowan will understand that he has things backward: normally it takes lots of conversations and organizing to motivate people to come out - that motivational work has already been done by the government.
We just need a framework to step out into. Watch what happens tomorrow when student walk out… the feeling, the motivation is there.

the Tl;dr: no General Strike (yet?), BUT the unions appear have made it their top priority to topple the UCP government!?
and now we need ⚡ ACTION ✊
