10,000 workers (full-time support staff, in accessibility services, the registrar's office, IT, facilities, etc.) at Ontario colleges started on strike today. They're #OPSEU members, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. JP Hornick, the OPSEU president, is rock solid and very impressive.

The situation in Ontario post-secondary education is grim all over.

the Ontario government has just made a flashy announcement of $750 million to boost spots for science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) students by 20,500 at colleges & universities across the province, as part of its response to Trump2 tariffs.

The subtext: there's *zero* extra resources for humanities, social sciences, & arts programmes at Ontario universities and colleges.

🗳️The Ontario election is February 27th. ➡️Send a message to the party leaders asking them to commit to supporting Ontario universities to help them drive innovation and economic growth. #ONpoli #ONPSE #Fairness4CF buff.ly/4k2uXRA

This election, ask your candidates to: Stop the gigification of teaching. For many contract faculty, "part time" teaching is not their side job. It's their only job and sole source of inclome. Hiring contract faculty into permanent positions will create good jobs on our campuses and allow them to invest in their local economies. On February 27 vote for job security! OCUFA

Ontario still ranks dead last among Canadian provinces on the league table of how much per-student post-secondary education operating funding is provided to Colleges and Universities. and now the federal government slashing international student visa numbers has produced a double whammy.

Steve Orsini, president and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities:
"You're going to see hiring freezes and layoffs.”

@OCUFA is calling on the provincial government to invest 11.75% into our universities over the next five years to ensure #Fairness4CF, students, and all campus workers to improve campus conditions for everyone. #TogetherWeCan #OnLAB #BrockU #OnPOLI #CDNPSE #ONPSE #ONLAB ocufa.on.ca/fairness

A group of people of diverse identities stands around an image of the Ontario legislative building with a circle pointing at the building, which reads 11.75%. Some people are smiling, some have their fists raised. A banner under them reads: Together, we can! Under the banner, a message box contains the statement: together, we can improve working conditions for faculty and learning conditions for students. Many contract faculty face unfair working conditions, and all faculty are facing unsustainable workloads. For faculty, this means less time for research and course development. For students, this means larger classes, less one-on-one student-faculty engagement, and fewer opportunities for mentorship and advising. For the community, it means less time for faculty to engage in pioneering research that can benefit Ontario economically, culturally, and socially. Many #ContractFaculty can't put down roots on campus because their jobs are unstable. With an 11.75% increase in provincial #OnPSE funding, we could bring student-to-faculty ratios closer to the national average and make more contract faculty permanent. #Fairness4CF #BrockU #OnLAB #OnPOLI #CdnPSE #TogetherWeCan ocufa.on.ca/fairness

Here I am, working to maintain the librarians' and archivists' reputation as the most militant bargaining unit on campus #uwofa #cdnpse #onpse #Labour

Me in front of a UWO Faculty Association voting screen, dropping my strike vote into the ballot box
2023-09-08

Negotiations at Western are not going well. The association has asked the conciliator to file a "no-board report". Seventeen days after this report is filed (and assuming that a strike vote has been held), the librarians at UWO will be in a legal strike position.

my employer continues to radicalize me. They won't pay us more, or hire to replace vacancies created by attrition, or to expand the number of librarians in keeping with the growth of the undergraduate enrolment, but they WILL increase our benefits for therapy!

Highlights from the latest round of librarian bargaining at #UWO

- the Employer refuses to commit to provide every librarian with an office.

- the Employer continues to resist ensuring that workload not be impacted by loss of personnel

- the Employer also refuses to any language that would improve the librarian/student ratio.
