#OpenInfrastructures

2025-05-21

On my way to beautiful Vienna (a full 11h train ride from Hamburg) to attend this year's AEUP conference #AEUP25 🤗

Together with colleagues from @oapenbooks @openbookcollect and the Netherlands University Presses (nups.nl), we will be hosting a workshop on how the NUPs are collaborating with #openinfrastructures in the #OAbooks space to establish a collective catalogue for their presses - this is gonna be fun!

Come join us if you happen to be in Vienna these next few days 😉

It was an honour to participate in the discussions on the future of scientific publishing at the Janelia campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the principles and features of an open and transparent communication system and sharing how @OKMaps' AI-powered platform can enhance discovery, curation, and research assessment within such a framework.

A big shout-out to the organisers and all participants!

I greatly enjoyed discussing Open Knowledge Maps (@OKMaps) at the Munin Conference on Scholarly Publishing (@MuninConf) in Tromsø 🇳🇴 last week.

It was fantastic to speak about the possibilities for community-led AI systems in scholarly communication and to share how participatory governance and open infrastructures can create impactful, community-owned tools.

A huge thank you to the organisers and participants for such a stimulating event! 👏

🚨 Together with our Supporting Members, we are advancing innovation in open research and knowledge sharing.

And so we are thrilled to announce that the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft has upgraded to a Visionary Membership. This partnership will bolster our future development as we collaborate to drive open innovation in science.

Statement from Mag. Dr. Georg Russegger, Head of the Open Innovation in Science Center at the Ludwig Boltzmann Society: “We provide our scientists with the freedom to experiment and rethink, exploring experimental methods to make knowledge transfer more creative, flexible and effective. The LBG OIS Center, in particular, is an international centre for open and interdisciplinary research with a strong focus on participatory practices. We are proud to be a long-term supporting member of Open Knowledge Maps, and to work together on societal challenges and opportunities.”

What if it's not that there's not enough money for #OpenInfrastructures, but instead, it's that the costs of competition are too high?

In our latest blog post, Katherine Skinner questions some deep assumptions in the Open Infrastructure space: investinopen.org/blog/the-empe

Quote: Our current system incentivizes our siloed open tools and services to jockey and pretend and spend inordinate amounts of time and energy trying to attract funding to stay afloat. From "The emperor's new clothes: Common myths hindering open infrastructure".
