TIL about #DeltaChat, an open source decentralised messaging system with end-to-end encryption (#E2EE) that runs on top of... email ! delta.chat/en/

In some of the discussions around the UK #OnlineSafetyAct (#OSA) this kind of thing came up as a would-OSA-apply-or-not hypothetical test case, so it's amusing to discover that it has been around for years :blobfoxdead:

And yes, there is an open source fedi bot that uses the Mastodon API, converting posts to/from email :aMarxParty:

The public order offences being discussed at the moment with Nick Timothy’s ten minute rule motion, and called a backdoor to blasphemy laws also have an online censorship aspect. As the Public Order Act 1986 and causing harassment, alarm or distress is a schedule 7 priority offence for Online Safety Act. #freeexpression #OSA

The silver lining of the OSA has been a chance put a human face to the struggle faced by so many other site operators, and to offer an empathic and compassionate voice to help them figure it out #osa #ofcom

@Ofcom is running a "The Online Safety Act explained: How to comply with the rules to protect children" conference - for all its faults it's nice to finally see concrete examples of what OFCOM does and doesn't consider harmful, with specific carveouts for lived experience. Also good to see mysogynistic content explicitly listed.

A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk on how to comply with the Online Safety Act, explicitly aimed at small independent site owners. #osa #censorship

How do you solve a problem like the UK Online Safety Act? 😵‍💫

For organisations wondering where to start, look no further...

Delve into our new guide through the regulatory maze of duties placed on online service providers by the Act and Ofcom.

The Online Safety Act could harm expression online when it's more crucial than ever.

Faced with onerous duties, small sites will shutdown or block UK users, leaving us with the Sophie's Choice of algorithmically manipulative Big Tech platforms.

We need #netplurality so users can choose platforms that favour trust and positive interactions over misdirection and provocation.

Quote from Dia J Kayyali, co-author of 'How to Fix the Online Safety Act': "As the UK follows in Trump's footsteps by becoming ever more hostile to the rights of transgender people and less welcoming to immigrants, free expression online - including for LGBTQIA+ kids - is more important than ever."

This week we published our report into the UK Online Safety Act.

We warn that the Act disproportionately impacts small sites, tipping the balance of power further towards Big Tech and threatening our freedom of expression online.

Quote from Dr Bernard Keenan, co-author of 'How to Fix the Online Safety Act. "If the Online Safety Act encourages platforms to over-moderate legal content, it may result in chilling effects, disproportionate impact on marginalised or persecuted groups, and disproportionate risks on smaller services."

🗞️ NEW: Read about our important report into the Online Safety Act in Digit.

“This complicated legislation favours Big Tech who have the means and capacity to comply with the Act’s onerous provisions.

Instead of tackling online harms, the Act concentrates the market power of Big Tech companies, exacerbating the underlying reasons that harmful content circulates.”

@openrightsgroup you cannot fix what's inherently broken!

#OSA, like #KOSA, #FOSTA & #SESTA before, is #cyberfacist bs and everyone in favour of it should be voted out of office!

The UK Online Safety Act threatens net plurality.

ORG calls on the government not to centralise power in monopoly Big Tech. We need measures to introduce competition, so users can choose platform experiences they can trust.

The sprawling UK Online Safety Act introduces age verification of users.

Ofcom leaves the choice of provider up to the platforms. This creates a new market for largely untested services that'll handle sensitive data.

It should be up to users to choose which method and provider they use.

In trying to tackle the worst of the web, we're harming the best of it.

In the face of onerous duties, sites may simply block UK users. And with it goes our right to access information.

That's why @wikipedia has launched a judicial review of the #OnlineSafetyAct.

Online safety duties disproportionately impact small and medium-sized businesses, even if run voluntarily.

Many sites are closing already, including a hamster forum, a local residents group and a video game that had been running for 19 years 🤷‍♂️

NEW REPORT: How to fix the UK Online Safety Act.

This broken legislation weighs heavy on small sites, exerting a burden that only Big Tech can withstand.

It further concentrates the market dominance of platforms that have incubated harmful content.

Instead we need greater user choice and voice over platforms.

@cryptohagen @wikimediafoundation Correction: the #OnlineSafetyAct is already in force and has already had damaging effects. However the site categorisation that Wikimedia are objecting to has not yet been implemented.
