On in 1918, women voted for the first time in a UK general election. Christabel , daughter of Emmeline, sister of Sylvia, a veteran of the movement, narrowly lost her race for a seat in Parliament. And in Ireland, women helped win.

The photo of Christabel Pankhurst from 1909 is amazing! For a picture so old it somehow looks amazingly modern.

Today in Labor History February 9, 1907: Over 3,000 women marched in London for women’s suffrage. Later, people called it the Mud March because of the incessant rain, which left the women splattered in mud. The march came in the wake of several years of direct action, led by Emmeline Pankhurst’s WSPU (AKA the suffragettes). It was the largest suffrage march to date in England and garnered considerable publicity. Emmeline Pankhurst was the mother of Sylvia Pankhurst, a left (council) communist and follower of Anton Pannekoek.

Watching #ChrisPackam on #channel4 : "Is it time to break the law?"

I do agree that everyone who is a good person, have no choice but to fight for making this a liveable planet

How do we each make the biggest impact?

How do we follow in the footsteps of #Pankhurst & #Mandela at the time the planet needs us most in the #ClimateEmergency ?

Allyship, the Fishguard 1908 edition.

Emmeline #Pankhurst made her first of several visits to Fishguard in July 1908, speaking in favour of women's suffrage and government dragging their feet over the issue. According to the newspaper coverage, she found a receptive audience.

There were a few unimportant interruptions in the course of her speech, and a young man who had made himself prominent in that respect brought forth the remark from a local tradesman:—"Look here, we have come to hear this lady speak and not to hear your rubbish." This was received with general "Hear, hears," and the interrupter shortly afterwards disappeared from amongst the audience. On the whole Mrs. Pankhurst gained a sympathetic hearing.two black and white postcards showing Emmeline Pankhurst giving a speech from inside a car parked in Fishguard market square.
