#KingMillennialEntertainment has some disingenuous and outright wrong history about #Democrats, #Republicans, and the party switch. And as usual @offjawaggon.bsky.social tears him right TF down for it!! #partyswitch #democrat #maga #republicans youtu.be/X8saklQNkro?...

How disingenuous can they get?

As both a political agent and a student of history, I think it is fair to say the U.S. has entered its seventh "party system." The Republican party is something fundamentally different than what it was a decade ago. And the Democratic party is... also there.

@jemmesedi Oh he means imprisoned people. For a second there I thought Biden was called to pardon working-class Americans because they voted Republican. :awesome:

Had to circle back with a graphic of the presidential vote history for Texas. Yes, the #PartySwitch happened.

Check out these vote history graphs for Mississippi and Alabama β€” with your naked eyes, can you see the #PartySwitch?!

Had to circle back to this slide to talk about just how "completely" the #PartySwitch took.

Here's a graphic showing the #Alabama presidential voting history: pretty much solid blue from 1828 through to 1968 (with some caveats, but that's a digression for another time), and then solid red from 1980 to present.

"Southern white Democrats started the KKK!!!"

do I seriously need to explain the party switch to you or can I just whack you upside the head with a high school history book for the all the good it would do?

@ashton I'm not sure whether to cheer or boo but the article is very well written, concisely locating the tension within the shadow of the #PartySwitch

@black_intellect

I summarized an exploration of the #whitesupremacy and #racism that powered the #PartySwitch mstdn.party/@duaneaubin/110079

There have always been other candidates around the big winner. What drove the big winner to the big win? Great question. One consideration is the combination of timing, and a disingenuous, wink-wink, dog-whistle message that creates the sense of inclusion, of being an insider while pursuing an agenda to perpetuate #WhiteSupremacy with plausible deniability.

@William_Robison

Agree. But, this thread isn't actually about the greatest president.

I've been doing a series of threads on #WhiteSupremacy.

This post was just a lead in to talking about the #PartySwitch

@lolonurse

Yep!

While there are a lot of articles out there discussing aspects of the #PartySwitch, most of them curiously but unsurprisingly fail to mention some of the situations that are critical to really grasping it.

So, while small, I do intend for this to be a contribution to wider to efforts to help more people better understand not only THAT it happened, but when, how and why it happened.

For me, THIS is the kicker of this thread.

It's got it all the elements entwined - #SouthernStrategy, the Phillips quote, Chisholm, and the landslide for a dude like Nixon!

I could have posted just this one single toot as evidence of the #PartySwitch!

But getting here was half the fun, and the journey was as important as the destination, showing clearly how pervasive #WhiteSupremacy has been throughout #AmericanHistory and #politics.

The entire scope should erase any/all good-faith doubt.

14/23 #RichardMNixon, the Republican California senator (though born in NY) who had been vice-president under #DwightDEisenhower, ran for president back in 1960, losing to #JFK.

He lost the 1964 nomination to #BarryGoldwater (noted as a significant conservative shift for the Republican party).

Nixon ran again in 1968 and (finally) won β€” but just barely; to strengthen his administration, he needed an angle, coming up with his #SouthernStrategy.

Nixon strategically powered the #PartySwitch

23/23 So, yeah, be it resolved, the #PartySwitch absolutely did happen and, like so much in #AmericanHistory and #politics, #WhiteSupremacy is all up in it.

Next week, exploring how the Irish became white will be eye-opening for many (and should be shorter, too!)

But, first (as always) β€”thoughts?

22/23 In previous threads we noted the intersectionality of all of this - #racism, #misogyny, #homophobia, #transphobia, #ablism, #ChristianNationalism, #fascism...

What's going on with Republican lawmakers these days (new Jim Crow laws in Mississippi, sex laws in Florida, etc., etc...) is more understandable through clarity on the #PartySwitch.

Those "racist Democrats" deserted their party, and now essentially occupy a Republican Party that is utterly no longer the #PartyofLincoln.

19/23 In Alabama, at the Neshoba County Fair, (near where three Civil Rights activists were murdered in 1964, go figure) Reagan announced, in true conservative #dogwhistle fashion, "I am for states' rights."

Wink wink.

#JimmyCarter didn't stand a chance β€” another Republican 2x loser landed another landslide win thanks to another rallying cry to a base of #WhiteSupremacists.

The #PartySwitch was complete.

13/23 #JohnFKennedy, a northern Democrat like FDR, put a southerner (another Texan, #LyndonBJohnson), on his ticket, like FDR, in 1960.

#JFK was assassinated in the south (Dallas). #LBJ assumed presidency.

While Black folks were embracing - that is to say, switching towards - this new, progressive, Democratic Party, Johnson lamented that signing the Civil Rights Act 1964 meant the Democrats would "lose the South for a generation."

OBVIOUSLY, he saw the #PartySwitch happening.
