..cont. I'm acutely aware that for all the obvious value of a #PatternLanguage, it is incredibly unwieldy to introduce as a design tool into real collaborative building projects, this should help.
A tool for working with Christopher Alexander's #PatternLanguage based on the idea that it is fundamentally hypertext.
Use this to reduce the Pattern Language down to a subset relevant to the task in hand. When you print, you get just a simple shareable doc.
The URL automatically tracks your changes, so you can bookmark or share the link and the recipients will see the same pattern language you have created. Examples to follow...

Voltei a escrever. O primeiro texto é sobre o matemático, arquiteto e místico Christopher Alexander. Para ler este e outros textos, basta se inscrever por lá.

@darkuncle thanks. Interesting collection of #patternLanguage, I was not aware of
Doing the deep dive into Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language, which puts forward a theory of urban development (but also much much more). And now I'm dying to know what @davidwengrow.bsky.social has to say about it.
"Christopher Alexander and his group of architects, back in the ’70s, compiled the groundbreaking book A Pattern Language, which looks at the built environment from a city scale down to the décor on your house walls in terms of the human relations that structures and spaces elicit."

AFAIK this is where digital design pattern thinking comes from too (eg Dark Patterns).

Reading Chris Alexander's final book: The battle for the life and beauty of the earth. Best of all his books? A cliff-hanger, even!

Spans
- theory of beauty (a la Nature of Order) & pattern language
- practicality of pattern language(ING) - it always should be a verb not an abstract noun - all the way to
- economics of doing beauty on a budget and
- heavy politics when aesthetics goes head to head with corporate interests in the building design & construction sector.

Micro-architecural pattern: all rooms should have small strong hooks in the corners near the ceiling to facilitate the hanging of bunting. Make celebrating easy. #architecture #PatternLanguage
Interesting historical note by @k9ox on the relationship between #patternlanguage in its Alexander form and in object oriented software production #oop

Ideal house features, including design
If I could build a house from scratch: rammed earth walls, metal roof, proper sitting and site design to catch warm sunshine. You could do a lot to both stay warm and stay cool using only passive elements, without needing any power. Doesn't that sound handy right about now?
I am greatly inspired by Ben Falk and WrathOfGnon with their discussions of traditional building techniques and passive resilience.
Here is Part 2 on my list of ideal home elements - https://brownfoxff.substack.com/p/ideal-house-do-overs-with-better
I especially like Energy Vanguard's description of the "hot water rectangle" - https://www.energyvanguard.com/blog/efficient-hot-water-delivery-with-a-simple-tool/
How often have you run the tap waiting for hot water? No more.

@MayInToronto I am fascinated by the discussions regarding #softwareengineering.
Ime, there are fundamental concepts/building blocks which are consistent across languages, interfaces - e.g. #patternlanguage. The rapid evolution in #programminglanguages seems driven in part to surface/avoid dev errors. (Plus, of course, #shiny.)
Certification works. It is simply "engineering licensure" in a corporate-controlled process. It could be generalized. But it would be a huge mess of red tape.
@JamesGleick Good question! We're wondering that too as we plod away developing our #PatternLanguage portal... labs.publicsphereproject.org Thanks!
