Here's some updates on the little 'Personal API' Django app I made for getting some status updates in the footer of my website.

As part of moving away from iOS, I've also replaced my Apple Watch with a Garmin device. Which means I'll have to figure out a way to get some of those data out to display it in my website footer!

Does anyone have a recommendation/existing solution for how to export small chunks of that data in regular intervals to an HTTP endpoint? Or will I have to learn how to use the Garmin API after all? 🙈

My secret to above average fitness? Plateauing and then waiting to get old enough to get into a different age bracket. From below average to above average, by benefit of turning 40 😅

Alternatively, a cautionary tale about the limits of quantifying health and wellbeing.

#personalscience #quantifiedself

A screenshot from Apple health showing cardio fitness. On the Y-axis the fitness values and a red upper/lower boundary showing the “below average” range. On the X axis are dates. The fitness values are stable around 40, before January 10 they are classified as “below average”, since then as “above average”.

«Symptom Radar works by evaluating metrics like resting heart rate, heart rate variability, temperature trends, and breathing rate to detect significant changes from your long-term baselines.»

Fun to see that Oura is now also using the approach we’ve come up with in the #personalscience community back in 2020 🙈 #quantifiedself

Had the “chance” to see the Apple Health Vitals in action. Can agree, I feel like crap. Interestingly, the watch only picked it up today, but I noticed some infection starting already yesterday.

#personalscience #quantifiedself

An Apple Watch screenshot. The top shows the current date & analog clock face with the time. Below a health display, stating “3 outliers” - with 3 violet/pink dots hovering above a blue baseline. The legend for the dots gives a heart, a lung and a thermometer. Two blue dots to the right fall on the baseline, with the icon showing a drop of blood with O2 on it and a bed.An Apple health screenshot from the phone. Same 5 points, but with the temperature one labeled “wrist temperature +1.86 °C from the baseline”

Spend a bit of time today on updating the MediaWiki and extensions that are powering the #PersonalScience wiki at wiki.openhumans.org

There's nothing better to make you appreciate how brittle our technical infrastructures are. 🤣 More seriously: If anyone encounters issues, please drop me a line!

The magnum opus of Katharina's PhD thesis has now been published in Royal Society Open Science: «Co-designing a #wiki-based community knowledge management system for #personalscience»! 🎉

This article on potatoes also features the fun “All Potato Diet” #citizenscience effort!

“The pseudonymous science bloggers behind Slime Mold Time Mold are running an informal trial where they invite readers to try their own riffs on Chris Voigt’s potato-only diet. A few participants who ate only potatoes and dairy—almost a replica of the 19th-century Irish diet—reported that they’d lost weight over the month.”

Just looked at that “vitals” feature that the upcoming Apple Watch OS will have: Apparently it'll be based on if 2+ of your physiological metrics are outside the 'normal' range.

This seems like a good validation of my own "heuristic" approach that I made back in December 2022 (I’ve written up here later): tzovar.as/heuristic/

«Quantifying the self with others» looks at the particular #CitizenScience community that is #PersonalScience / #quantifiedself.

«This community cultivated useful conversations about personal health data, the sorts of participatory “reflection and dialogue” needed to achieve “a shared vision” for these technologies, through specific communication techniques that integrated personal and community goals or transcended them by marshalling an open science data imaginary.»

I wrote a small blog post about how I get (some) of my health metrics out of Apple Health to put it into my website's footer. And I used that as a good excuse to also update some pages in the #personalscience wiki. #quantifiedself

I replaced my Oura Ring with a non-smart band instead – which doesn't require being charged but is supposed to last a lifetime. 😂

This meant I had to adapt the data source in my website footer. Now it displays data from my smartwatch instead. Newest addition: environmental noise levels & time spent in daylight 🧛

Bastian's local time is 13:15 (BST). He is currently in Poplar, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland flag of the country
There the condition is Clouds and it's 20.1˚C.
This is close to , where it's currently silent, with 783 ppm of CO2 in the air.

Last night, he slept 7.60 hours, with a measured wrist temperature of 35.79 ˚C. Today, he took 1707 steps and spent 140 minutes in daylight so far. His last resting heart rate was 63 bpm and the environmental noise level around him is 49.50dB.

His phone is 55% charged and is currently unplugged. He recently listened to God Said No by Craig Cardiff.

As Monday morning might be a better time to share than Friday afternoons: Check out our latest preprint on creating a shared knowledge base for #selfresearch, #personalscience & #quantifiedself. Katharina did a really great job on co-designing and testing the "Personal Science Wiki" with practitioners to make sure it fits their mental models of the practice!

«Co-Designing a wiki-based community knowledge management system for #personalscience»

Katharina – who defended her PhD in November – did amazing work on co-designing and user testing it with a wide range of practitioners! Read it here: arxiv.org/abs/2402.09799

A cartoon titled “personal science: learning from continuous blood glucose data”

A person that was beheaded has a talking head laying on the floor saying: “I think they mean your own blood data”.

Another person holding an axe in one hand and a glucose monitor in another hand says “Really? Sorry. Well, you know what they say: learning by doing”.
