Reprogram your brain to believe that positive change is coming and you will see opportunities you might otherwise miss. Pessimism and cynicism won't help us.

The image has white background. There is a pill in highlight, half white half red. Above and below it, there is text in English in black letters.

The text in above:
This is a placebo meme for humor calibration purposes.

The texto in below:
It has no inherent effect but studies have shown it to be as effective as regular memes in a certain percent of the population.

Supplements and garlic won’t cure the common cold, despite what the BBC say

The BBC reported on home remedies to fight the common cold – but what they gave us were weak, biased, and p-hacked studies

🥴 Oh, the groundbreaking revelation that not all placebos wear the same lab coat! Our esteemed author regales us with tales of 18th-century gadgetry more effective at relieving wallets than ailments. 🚜✨ Who knew the placebo elite had such a rich history of being equally useless but differently priced?

The Beecher story, the origin of the placebo effect myth, likely didn’t happen

The most-cited example of the powerful placebo is Henry Beecher using saline instead of morphine... except, it likely never happened

Placebo surgery: why performing fake operations doesn’t actually help anyone

Placebo surgeries do not work – if a surgery performs no better than placebo, it means that operation doesn't work, not that placebos are powerful

German researchers tested if side effects (e.g., a burning nose from a nasal spray) could enhance treatment. Turns out, they do! People felt less pain with placebo sprays causing mild side effects, believing "the meds work."

:doi: doi.org/10.1093/brain/awae132

This makes us rethink: could even mild sensations (bitter taste, slight burning) make drugs seem more effective? 🤔 No wonder this study won an #IgNobelPrize - it’s both funny and thought-provoking!

#IgNobel #PlaceboEffect #MedicalResearch

The data show that mild side effects can serve as a signal for effective treatment thereby influencing treatment expectations and outcomes, which is mediated by the descending pain modulatory system. Using these mechanisms in clinical practice could provide an efficient way to optimize treatment outcome. In addition, our results indicate an important confound in clinical trials, where a treatment (with potential side effects) is compared to placebo.

Pacemakers don’t work when they’re switched off – we should doubt studies that say otherwise

Among the many odd claims made about the placebo effect is that pacemakers work even before they're switched on - which obviously isn't true

The evidence for pill colour impacting placebo effects gets flimsier the more you examine it

The idea that the colour of a pill influences what placebo response you get is based on a succession of badly designed or badly interpreted trials

Religion is simply a powerful placebo – offering priests a sense of ritual, but little else

Theatrical but ultimately ineffective, religion may be the ultimate placebo effect - as 17th Century priest Jean Meslier realised 300 years ago

Overly simplistic headlines muddy the water around placebo effects and mislead the public

Recent headlines claim we 'finally know' how placebos work, thanks to a trial that is little more than Pavlovian conditioning. No wonder the public is confused

The #PlaceboEffect isn't just perception.

Well, OK, it is literally perception, but a group of scientists studying it appear to have figured out at least some of the neurochemical basis for why a #placebo works. It's chemistry.
