How do we make informed health decisions about traditional, complementary & integrative medicine (TCIM)?

This updated interpretive review explores the challenges.
📖 sciencedirect.com/science/arti

🔍 The synthesis of 167 publications, including WHO, EVIPNet, GRADE, and TCIM-specific guidance affirmed the importance of:
1. Transparent decision-making processes with TCIM stakeholders
2. Context-sensitive framing to optimise TCIM relevance
3. Whole-of-evidence approach, including traditional knowledge (TK)
4. Centering equity, including epistemic equity

TCIM guideline developers are leading the way with rigorous, inclusive strategies evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM).

By respecting diverse knowledge systems, these innovations offer valuable models for global health policy and guideline development.

Africa: From Scepticism to Science - How Two Doctors Embraced Evidence-Based Harm Reduction: [allAfrica] Back in 2014, what started as a routine check-up for a patient turned into something Dr Rohan Sequeira, a medical doctor from India, still cherishes today. What a surprise!

There is some evidence that some "alternative medicine" treatments for autism work!

And at least one scientist claimed that the article shows "no evidence".

Science is difficult.
Combining it with emotions, and attitudes like , might occassionally make doing science too tricky.

@marcrr

I get wanting to show the very widespread failures & poor evidence.

Why the extra step to "no evidence"?

Oxytocin: "restricted/repetitive behaviours in adults, ... small effect size was found".

"supported by at least moderate levels of evidence ... was the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids in school-age children"

" number of interventions ... large effect sizes ...reached statistical significance, but ... supported by very low levels of evidence."

What a surprise! There's no evidence that "alternative medicine" treatments for autism work, and their security hasn't been tested. #EvidenceBasedMedicine

A modern knee implant (Persona CR) was compared to PFC Sigma and NexGen CR in a randomized trial with 240 patients over 2 years. Results showed no significant differences in patient-reported function, despite the new design. Limitations include a single center, lack of imaging, and surgeons' familiarity with conventional implants. Full paper: actaorthop.org/actao/article/v (Irmola et al., 2024)
