It's not news that U.S. corporations are profiting from the destruction caused by U.S. military actions, directly or indirectly (in #Gaza currently the demolition contractor is vassal/client state #Israel). This profit-making often occurs through military contracts, logistics, and reconstruction that follows war and occupation.

Taking #Blackwater and the Nisour Square massacre in #Iraq as an example, these "contractors" (mercenaries) operate in a legal gray area, with little accountability. Their actions, even accidental ones, could escalate the conflict. Not to mention it's an industry driven by profit, which incentivizes prolonging conflict, not ending it.

Oh and the irony with that?

#PlausibleDeniability is used by #corporations, like #UnitedHealthcare, to lower risk and liability for their actions, making themselves harder to go after, both in court and the media, and lowering the amounts people can get out of payouts from inevitable lawsuits.... Basically, the kind of thing they have been doing for the past few decades which led to this act of violence being perpetrated.

Like, this really shows that, in what could potentially be an era of violence reentering protest against corporate-control of government and society, it is still very possible for a lone activist to carry out this sort of "#IncitementByAction" without being immediately identified.

And while it's probably better to do protest actions publicly than to hide, there are a couple of benefits to doing so. As an unknown shooter, this guy was basically representative of no group or person, simply a generic individual for people to speculate on and debate. As someone with plausible deniability, even if he was caught, he could just stay silent during the trial... Which would benefit his cause by forcing the prosecution to discuss the motive, and allow the defense to respond by pointing out how many people have that motive and why, forcing the entire issue to be brought up in a court case for the act that was carried out.

So...

Yeah, #PlausibleDeniability might be very useful for an activist who may be arrested.

Some thoughts on a "next generation" #private #messenger .

Main line: if you want to do this, talk to people who escaped from #russia-occupied territories of #Ukraine.

Partially inspired by the advertisements of #Signal to introduce post-quantum cryptography or posts of a guy here who raised questions of what should a messenger fulfill to qualify as a decent alternative to it.

Making good #cryptography better is important, but will not help alone.

Nobody will break a cipher, it is a purely theoretical task. Enemies will break (1) person in question; (2) device.

In relatively civilized countries, they will charge you for failure to surrender you password. In less civilized, they will extort it. The main parameter regulating the strength of your #password is not its length, but the temperature of a soldering iron stuck into your asshole.

#PlausibleDeniability and an unknown number of shadow identities, silent alarm passwords (which convert all your sensitive stuff to white noise), tradition to actually have a couple of "dirty" identities - for pornography, for example, various guilty pleasures and/or discussions of family budget - should be present. And usage of such messenger must be damn popular and poorly blockable by internet regulators - that the usage itself could not be a sign of suspicious activity.

Study the histories of how russians search people's messengers - this is your main way to improve the safety of your messenger.

We all really need to understand what #InfluenceOperations are and how they work. Then, we'll start noticing their presence all around us, especially where we wouldn't have expected it. The understanding also helps us #resist.

Deniability (or “plausible deniability”) means that no party in an interaction receives a transcript that can be used as cryptographic proof said interaction happened or what the content was. In order to achieve this, deniable protocols are designed in ways that allow the creation of fake transcripts that are indistinguishable from real ones.

Importantly (and maybe unintuitively) this does not mean that the interaction has to sacrifice authenticity (the certainty for the involved parties to know that they are talking to whom the think they are talking to and that the content of any messages arrives unaltered compared to what was sent)!
