Ancient lakes in the Gobi Desert supported human life 8,000 years ago

The Gobi Desert today is one of the driest and harshest landscapes on Earth, stretching over northern China and Mongolia. Yet, a recent study published in PLOS One reveals that thousands of years ago, the desert was dotted with wetlands and lakes that nourished fertile ground for human life. University of Wrocław archaeologists, in collaboration with international colleagues, have discovered that the Gobi was much more hospitable in the past than it is today...

🦥 For #FossilFriday this is P68.40.1 - the rarest Minnesota fossil I’ve ever held in my hand: an well-preserved ungual phalanx of Megalonyx jeffersoni (Giant Ground Sloth).

Discovered in the late 1960s in a pile of excavated peat, it remains the singular specimen of this animal found in the state and is now in the Science Museum of Minnesota’s collection.

🐪 #LostBones 🐪 says: Hmmm… A recent visit to the Jackson County Historical Society revealed a camel calcaneus in the collection.

Among specimens from a 2015 study of a section of the Des Moines River, which examined bison, horse, deer, and other skeletal remains it was part of over 800 bones cataloged. But was this camel actually in Minnesota? More to come.

🦬🍲 In 1984, Scientists at the University of #Alaska ate 50,000-year-old frozen bison #meat to celebrate completing the preservation of "Blue Babe," a perfectly preserved steppe #bison discovered by #gold miners. The researchers described the ancient neck stew as having a "strong #Pleistocene aroma" but tasting delicious, with no ill effects.

These skulls likely belong to the extinct species Bison occidentalis. Radiocarbon dating of other material from the site yielded a calibrated age of 7,146 ± 25 years BP.This channel was packed with bison and other mammal remains. Local citizen Pat Cherney, along with his wife and several friends, salvaged everything they could before the bulldozers rolled in. Included in their efforts were over 100 skulls or partial skulls.Feeling for bones at the Anoka Sand Plain Cherney Bison Site!Bison skull #147

This unassuming and weathered fragment is a rare example of a Giant Ground Sloth tooth.

The Giant Ground Sloth roamed during the period and it's remains are found in the deposits of the famous Bone Valley formation.

This partial example is broken and beat-up, but is the only one I have found in 15 years of searching.

I found this five years ago while searching a gravel bed in a remote area of the Peace River.

Artist's rendition of a Giant Ground Sloth feeding on a tree. A figure of a man is shown for size comparison and the sloth towers over it.A partial Giant Ground sloth tooth. It measures approx. 2 inches across. A black centimeter cube is shown for scale.
