🚨 New Publication Alert 🚨
From Mind to Matter: Patterns of Innovation in the Archaeological Record and the Ecology of Social Learning

We model the conditions under which new technologies spread, how they spread, and what we should expect to see in the archaeological record given different types of transmission.

And back to #ants 🐜! 📢 New paper on #collective emigration #dynamics & #DecisionMaking. Caste composition affects the chances of finding a new nest & relocation success. We also provide a model that helps understand how this happens.

Animal behavior is notoriously complex. This #PLOSBiology Perspective looks at how technological advances in #BehavioralEcology have enabled the study of variability over space and time, allowing a more holistic view of this complexity.

Rattlesnakes can calm down their friends, study shows

"Research reveals that rattlesnakes, like humans, experience stress reduction when in the presence of a companion snake, a phenomenon known as social buffering."

Animals respond to weekday vs. weekend differences in #human activity in their habitat.

#Hummingbirds decreased defense of their territories during busy weekdays compared to weekends, which allowed rivals more access to their flowers.

Studies like this one (Mendiola-Islas et al 2023) are reminders of the effect that humans have on #animals and #plants living with or near them, even when we are simply going about our business.

Figure 2 heading from the linked paper: "Figure 2: Variation of human activity levels recorded at the study site.
Violin plots showing the kernel probability density of the data at different values to illustrate differences between weekends and weekdays in the number of pedestrians and cyclists (A), dogs and farm animals (B) and motor vehicles (C). The box plots within each violin plot denote the median and interquartile range along with outliers. At each hummingbird territory (n = 21 territories), these human activities were monitored for a period of four continuous hours (0800–1,200 h) on weekdays and weekends."Figure 3 heading from the linked paper: "Figure 3: Changes in behavior recorded in territorial hummingbirds surveyed on weekdays and weekends.
Violin plots showing variation in the number of chases of intruders (A), the number of flowers visited by the territory owner (B), and the number of intruders foraging in the territory without being chased by the owner (C), as a function of the day of the week in the surveyed hummingbird territories (n = 21 territories). The area in violin plots shows the data distribution, and the box plots within each violin plot denote the median and interquartile range along with outliers."

Snakes Can Hear You Better Than You Think

Researchers have dispelled the myth that snakes are deaf to airborne sound and can ‘hear’ only ground vibrations. Snakes were placed in a soundproofed room, and sounds with different frequencies were played on speakers. [...] The experiment suggests that snakes can indeed hear sounds in the frequency range and volume of a human voice.

Hello synapse.cafe!

Just migrated from sciencemastodon, a perfectly good instance, but I think this will feel a little more like home. Anyway, #introduction time again!

I’m an assistant #professor at the University of Manitoba in #Winnipeg. I run the #Invertebrate #Neuroethology #Laboratory, where we study #AnimalBehavior, #Neuroscience, and #BehavioralEcology. We are interested in the #NeuralCircuits of #Learning, #Memory, and #DecisionMaking, especially with respect to #TimeMemory, other areas of #Chronobiology, and #MultisensoryIntegration. We work mostly with #HoneyBees (#Apis #mellifera), but we like all #inverts!

I'm not sure what the solution is, but it is a problem across race, ethnicity, gender, and even language.

That said, I'm inclined to think it is a problem easier solved by decentralized entities agreeing to standardized code of conduct rather than a centralized entity attempting to enforce. Easier, although not easy. 🤓

#Introduction

#AssistantProfessor at U. of North Texas #UNT. I study #BehavioralEcology (#BehaviouralEcology) and #CommunityEcology with #insect #pollinators. My lab focuses on how #GlobalChange affects pollinator communities and the interactions within those communities, including #bee #foraging behavior.

Current projects study pollinators in #rangeland and #SocialInformation use across insect functional groups. Also collaborating with #TPWD to assess #conservation status of TX #NativeBees.

#introduction

I'm Alli, I am a phd student studying #migration #ecology of Mountain plovers. I'm broadly interested in #behavioralecology. Although most of my research is in the realm of #ornithology, I'm curious about why all kinds of animals do what they do!
