What a way to go out! Our last talk before we broke for the summer was Ashley Hall, Outreach Program Manager at the Museum of the Rockies on the evolution of birds!
Ashley is a talented palaeontologist and communicator and her enthusiasm and passion was evident throughout the talk.

Palaeontologists have found an ancient predator that looked similar to a moth. The 560 million year-old fossil looks sinister but fortunately it was only about the size of an index finger. It lived and swam in water. Interestingly it had an abodomen which comprised of several segments. In this type of creature this has not been seen before. It is related to modern day horsehoe crabs and woodlice.

I'm continually discovering that the useless skills I gained through years of plastic modelling (mostly gunpla) are paying off at my job as lecturer. I used my weathering skills today to make anatomical features stand out on a 3D printed fossil (printed using shiny white resin)!

Along with mammoth, bison, and horse specimens, the museum features exhibits on three prehistoric Native American cultures, as well as displays highlighting the city's history, military memorabilia, and pioneer life in Winnebago.

"Our new discovery, published today in Nature, details ancient fossil footprints found in Australia that upend the early evolution timeline of all tetrapods. It also suggests major parts of the story could have played out in the southern supercontinent of Gondwana.
This fossil trackway whispers that we have been looking for the origin of modern tetrapods in the wrong time, and perhaps the wrong place."
