Alberta separatism is flaring up again—but is leaving Confederation really the answer?

In my latest piece on Substack, I argue why proportional representation could offer a democratic solution to Western alienation

This is exciting. Folks in #venturacounty are gathering signatures to bring ranked choice AND PROPORTIONAL ranked choice voting to their local elections.

Awareness of #proportionalrepresentation is growing in the U.S. right along with frustration about our polarized calcified dysfunctional politics.

I think we're going to see more local governments adopting proportional representation (Albany CA already has it for their city council election. Portland OR just adopted it.) Then the state level (that's where ProRep comes in!) Then the U.S. (Fair Representation Act). Then the WORLD HA HA HA HA HA!

Just kidding most of the world already uses PR for their elections.

More women. More communities of color. More working-class voices. #ProportionalRepresentation creates a government that looks like the people it serves.

"Portlanders just used proportional ranked choice voting to elect their most representative city government in more than a century. Voters chose leaders who form a portrait of the city in miniature. The dozen councilors include three renters, five people of color, six women, eight millennials (one only 28 years old), and residents of twelve different neighborhoods. Most importantly, proportional representation paved the way for a council that reflects Portlanders’ varied political beliefs, full of advocates for different viewpoints from business to labor, from moderates to progressives, and even from animal rights to transportation safety."

Millions voted in fear—again.
That’s not strategy. That’s dysfunction.
We need to fix the system, not play its game.

You know, my proportional representation hyper fixation has been in overdrive since the election and two revelations occur:

1. Poilievre would likely have keep his seat.

2. Singh would have likely still been rejected.

Of course this is assuming a system like STV or Open List was in place where voters still directly vote for MPs (as we should.

And I say likely because people would change how they voted a little.

Over 19M Canadians voted this election.
Still, 1 in 3 stayed home.
Why? Because their vote likely wouldn't matter.
My latest Substack piece argues why proportional representation isn't just fairer—it boosts turnout too.

It could also be unnecessary, but it's something I think about time to time.

Also For the record by dual mandate I mean those nominated for the local single member ridings are on the open list ballot for the region automatically.

I can't see why this couldn't work for normal MMP or AV+ though I'd prefer open list for the region vote if we were to go MMP via dual mandate.

Though I'm likely over looking something mathmatical. Especially if multi member is part if it due to ridings getting as big as 7-9 as an example.

My motivation for this is mostly RUP related as I would want to expand the choice of single member districts to what would be in multi-member. Since it's cleaner for RUP to have follow best runner up for regional appointment, it can be seen as a pseudo-open list. AV+/STV+ model in mind.

Hey fellow proportional representation supporters. I have a hypothetical: how do we feel about MMP or other regional top up systems like RUP with best runner up appointment but parties are allowed to run N + 1 candidates in a riding/district?

Canada doesn’t need another false majority near miss — we need real democracy. This is the article to read right now. 🔥
We need proportional representation, not strategic voting traps.

@mayintoronto I pray for #ProRep daily and have been for longer than the decade that has passed since it was a big motivator for Trudeau’s reign. We all know what happened. It NEEDS to be implemented tout de suite!

In Canada, millions of votes are wasted every election—and it’s not an accident. It’s how first-past-the-post works.

In my latest piece, I lay out why proportional representation is the only real fix for our broken democracy.

#ProRep #cdnpoli #VotingMatters

The only think one would need to worry about is the independent commission for riding boundaries to determine how the new boundaries (with or without top up) would be redrawn but if we’re already do math fairly for the current regions, I only see PR as a bonus #prorep #canpoli

Canadian election are ridiculously secure and give us plenty of time to vote. I have full confidence that even something as complex as STV (ranked ballot PR) or RUP can be adapted to our election with some effort. Or open list MMP if we wanted something a little simpler comparatively. #prorep

You know the more I learn about the current electoral system in Canada the more confident I am in a STV (Single Tranferable vote), open list MMP (mixed member proportional) or RUP (rural urban proportional) is viable here in Canada. #canada #canpoli #prorep #proptionalrepresentation

I recently joined David Smith on “The Big Story” podcast to talk about why me & 90 others are running against Pierre Poilievre—and what that has to do with fixing Canada’s broken electoral system.

Bold, symbolic & desperately needed.
