With as many as 18 candidates in the Democratic primary for IL-09, it is clear that Illinois desperately needs ranked choice voting for its primary elections. This race could theoretically be won by a candidate with as little as 5.56% of the vote due to vote splitting. RCV would require the winning candidate to have a true majority of >50%, all while mitigating the problems of "spoilers" and "vote splitting."

Hear hear. But can we stop calling it “winner-take-all”? Part of the #RCV argument is that a candidate who doesn’t get a majority should not be understood to have won in any meaningful way. The article says it well: the “pick one” plurality voting system. Or “plurality-take-all” or “plurality-winner” system. Keep up the good work!

Why should parties use RCV in primaries? It drives party unity. Under the current system, the winning candidate could win with <50% of the vote when many candidates are running, which leaves many party members disappointed and unenthused with their presidential candidate. RCV requires the winner to have true majority support (>50%), so the winner is a true consensus choice that more voters in the party can actually be excited about.
