With as many as 18 candidates in the Democratic primary for IL-09, it is clear that Illinois desperately needs ranked choice voting for its primary elections. This race could theoretically be won by a candidate with as little as 5.56% of the vote due to vote splitting. RCV would require the winning candidate to have a true majority of >50%, all while mitigating the problems of "spoilers" and "vote splitting."

For those interested in voting method reform, specifically #RCV and #approvalVoting in #Montgomerycounty #maryland , there will be on 12/11/25 a hearing on MC 1-26, the voting methods bill: montgomerycountydelegation.com .

I believe signups for testimony from members of the public / groups are allowed up to 48 hours prior, so that would be 12/9/25, via montgomerycountydelegation.com

As I wrote in a blog post, AV eliminates both vote splitting and the center squeeze effect, incentivizing consensus.

Hear hear. But can we stop calling it “winner-take-all”? Part of the argument is that a candidate who doesn’t get a majority should not be understood to have won in any meaningful way. The article says it well: the “pick one” plurality voting system. Or “plurality-take-all” or “plurality-winner” system. Keep up the good work!

Why should parties use RCV in primaries? It drives party unity. Under the current system, the winning candidate could win with <50% of the vote when many candidates are running, which leaves many party members disappointed and unenthused with their presidential candidate. RCV requires the winner to have true majority support (>50%), so the winner is a true consensus choice that more voters in the party can actually be excited about.

One of our lead volunteers, Abigail Nichols, met with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson last week to discuss bringing ranked choice voting to Chicago as a way to increase voter engagement, give voters more choices, and save money! The mayor expressed support. We're working hard to move RCV forward in our city!

Frey Wins Third Term as Minneapolis Mayor Against Democratic Socialist Fateh

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey fended off a challenge from democratic socialist Omar Fateh to secure a third term by winning enough support in the second round of the city’s ranked-choice voting system. City election officials declared Frey, a Democrat, the winner Wednesday morning after tabulating second- and subsequent-choice votes. Frey won 42% of first-choice votes, followed by Fateh with…
