I agree with @SpookedBroccoli. I think @rbreich puts it best. Decades of horrible decisions like Citizens United have ratcheted money away from the middle class and into a tiny sliver of society that now wields obscenely outsized power. That sliver, the American oligarchy, owns Trump, owns half of Congress, owns SCOTUS, owns some entire states, and even owns women’s bodies in those states. The American oligarchy has decimated honest public education in some states and turned it into a factory for adherents to the principles that serve the oligarchy. And that’s it. Greed, avarice, power. The USA enabled the very things that are destroying it. #RIPUSA But I haven’t given up hope. So many really smart folks are now shouting from the rooftops more than ever. I don’t put much store in polls. I’ve never been contacted by a reputable polling company and I bet there are a lot of folks like me who haven’t been either.

Among the #USA’s faults is unbridled, unprincipled capitalism. @rbreich puts it well in his comments on the rot in #Boeing.

“…Airbus’s clear leadership over Boeing in matters of flight safety stems largely from differences in ownership and worker power — that is, from the European model of mitigating laissez-faire capitalism with a measure of public and worker power, in contrast with the American model of subjecting corporate policy almost entirely to the demands of investment bankers.“

This is why the #EuropeanUnion has a superior record in many areas related to quality of life for its citizens while the USA struggles with the most basic function of government: keep itself running for more than a few months at a time.

T.A.F. is why I created #RIPUSA. And I’m an American now in #Kyiv, heartbroken over what my country has become. I chalk it up to decades of horrendous decisions, like Citizens United, that ratcheted more and more wealth into a tinier and tinier sliver of the population and away from such necessities as schools. Timothy Snyder explains it really well in his book The Road to Unfreedom. The #USA is transitioning from the politics of inevitability to the politics of eternity. Written in 2018, the book is astonishingly prescient. That’s #history for you. All the answers are there. It takes a giant like Snyder to excavate them. The best I can hope for my country now is that it provides some profoundly teachable moments for other nations. Urgent lesson: “Norms” must be codified into law.
