The news that Radio Telivision Hong Kong (RTHK) is now fully aligned with CCP propaganda bodes ill for Hong Kongers because it curtails their access to impartial news on RTHK. While it's no longer a surprise, it highlights the fact that there is no such thing as 'one country, two systems' and that Taiwan's future under CCP rule would fare no better no matter CCP promises.

"On June 13, 2025, Hong Kong Director of Broadcasting Kwan Yuen-yee (關婉儀) and the Guangzhou Broadcasting Network (廣州廣播電視台), or GZBN, signed a memorandum of cooperation to deepen regional media integration. The partnership includes joint productions commemorating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II (抗戰勝利80周年) — a core propaganda theme for China in 2025. Kwan stated that RTHK will leverage its role in “linking the interior and connecting the exterior” (內聯外通) to foster a stronger sense of national identity (國民身份認同) among Hong Kong citizens, an idea closely associated with indoctrination in China’s CCP-led political system, including the study of “Xi Jinping Thought.”

À Hong Kong, la radio-télévision publique bientôt dirigée par un apparatchik

Le directeur des émissions de la radio et de la télévision publiques de #HongKong, Leung Ka-wing, 68 ans, a été limogé cinq mois avant son départ à la retraite. Il sera remplacé le 1er mars par le sous-secrétaire aux Affaires intérieures, Patrick Li Pak-chuen. Ce limogeage coïncide avec la publication d’un rapport gouvernemental très critique sur le traitement éditorial de l’actualité hongkongaise ces deux dernières années

“Il y a des déficiences dans le mécanisme de management éditorial”, a tranché le bureau du Commerce, dont dépend la #RTHK, dans ce rapport publié le 19 février. “La chaîne de responsabilité éditoriale est faible.” Le syndicat des employés de la chaîne a pour sa part parlé d’un rapport “défiant la logique”.

La nomination en 2015 de Leung, un journaliste chevronné, avait porté l’espoir qu’il saurait résister aux pressions politiques grandissantes de la part du camp pro-Pékin. Patrick Li est décrit quant à lui comme un “bureaucrate de carrière ayant travaillé dans les administrations des Affaires du continent et de la #Sécurité, sans expérience des médias”.

Le mouvement contre la loi sur l’extradition, en 2019, a mis la RTHK à rude épreuve, en particulier lorsqu’une journaliste a été accusée d’avoir fait de fausses déclarations, ou lorsque l’émission satirique Headliner a été déprogrammée à la suite de fortes pressions politiques. Dans les deux cas, Leung avait soutenu l’indépendance éditoriale de la chaîne. Lors d’une réunion au Conseil législatif en janvier, la RTHK avait été accusée par un député pro-Pékin de “couverture orientée” et de propagation de fausses nouvelles.

La RTHK, fondée en 1928, est le seul média public indépendant sur le plan éditorial en #Chine. Elle est souvent comparée à la BBC. La semaine dernière, alors que Pékin interdisait la diffusion des émissions du BBC World Service, la RTHK a également cessé la retransmission de certaines émissions de la radio britannique sur ses antennes.
