If you are left leaning, try to have a conversation with a conservative right winger using logic to back your arguments.

It is better to try and have a conversation rather than argue over differing opinions. You can change someone’s entire ideology using your words.

“Now is the time to use our agency—to be more civically involved, not less; to have the uncomfortable conversations we’ve been avoiding; to stop setting intellectual traps for those who are less informed; to listen for the sake of learning, instead of waiting for our turn to speak; to do meaningful things for one another, no matter how small or local the upside.”

I believe this deserves an open and #RespectfulDebate. Why does the conflict in #Gaza seems to spark more heated debates in public, while the even higher count of victims of atrocities in the deadlier conflict in #Ethiopia is not present in our public debate of west and east?

BTW: It is perfectly acceptable to only mention different aspects related to the debated topic without feeling the need to find a general explanation, which may not always be possible.

Is it possible to have civil political discourse even with strong disagreements? If so, how can we encourage more of it? #RespectfulDebate #HealthyDemocracy

If someone thinks something must change, then rather than just debating with others one at a time it's in their interest to invite others to listen in. If change is essential, maximizing the audience will accelerate winning people around. On the other hand, if someone arguing against you has a large audience, they can expose all the weaknesses in your argument. This benefits everyone. Obviously trolls can use it. But so can the rest of us to neutralize trolls and demagogues.

When two people debate with each other that is good. But when both invite others to weigh up what each says, then both gain even more: the wisdom of crowds isn't something to be intimidated by. If you don't convince most people, then that doesn't mean you must be wrong; maybe you need to learn how to argue your case better next time. And don't rule out the possibility you are wrong. Listen to different points of view.

@mastodonmigration I do get the impression that healthy, respectful debate is discouraged where the issue is of social/political interest. Perhaps a hashtag that denotes this would be helpful (eg. #healthydebatezone #respectfuldebate etc.)
