Tombstone fragment depicts three Roman legionnaires. The fragment was found at Croy Hill on the Antonine Wall, and is now part of the collections at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. 📸 My own. #ReliefWednesday #RomanScotland
The southern ramparts of Rough Castle Roman Fort on the Antonine Wall, near Falkirk. Built in around 142 AD, the fort is the second smallest on the wall, but the best preserved. 📸 My own. #RomanFortThursday #RomanScotland #AntonineWall
There's clearly a linear feature made of rocks crossing the sand that (to me) looks similar to the more eroded section of the southern end and which seems to line up with it, but there were no definitive signs that this is it. Any archaeologists/historians want to weigh in on whether this linear feature is, indeed, the northern end of the Roman ford?

I spent this afternoon looking for the remains of a Roman ford across the Clyde at Dumbuck, just west of Glasgow. The photo on the left is the better preserved southern portion on the Renfrewshire side which I visited a couple of years ago. The two photos on the right from today from around Milton Island on the northern side.

Looking forward to teaching a class on #RomanScotland for the students of the Notre Dame London Global Gateway tomorrow. There is a lot to cover in one hour, but I hope to at least mention the two new fortlets at Carleith and Bonnyside on the #AntonineWall.
RIB3515. It was found 1958 in the bed of the Almond below the Roman Fort of Bertha, north of Perth. It is now in #Perth and this was it on display there in 2019. It is a dedication to the Discip(u)lina Augusti, a military cult that first appears under #Hadrian and continues into the Severan period. Given the history of the area it is most likely from the Antonine phase of #Bertha fort.

The Entrance to the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University.
Opening in 1807, the Hunterian Museum is the oldest public museum in Scotland. Based on the collections of William Hunter, it now houses over one million items.
Of particular note (and well worth checking out) are its collection of marker stones from the Antonine Wall

the Deskford #carnyx is an amazing #celtic instrument, but what else can we learn from it's function, deposition, reconstruction, and wider socio-landscape?

Spent quite a bit of time during the last 2 days inventorying medals and updating their locations in Axiell. All I can see is numbers every time I close my eyes! However, I got some light relief when my son showed me his playmobil set up of the Romans invading Britain (he's doing the Romans at school) Need to get him over to #Trimontium ! The ominous Tyrannosaurus Rex in the background made me chuckle #RomanScotland #cataloguing #museum #parentsofmastodon
