📍The Palace of Monserrate. Sintra, 2025.

One of the most interesting things I learned about the romantic palaces dotting the hills of Sintra was that a lot of them were actually built by British, not Portuguese nobles. They'd come down here to live lives of fantasy.

Monserrate Palace is the epitome of a fairytale palace. There are trees here that are over a 100ft tall, babbling brooks with waterfalls, lotus ponds, and panoramic views of green hills, fields, and the ocean. The interiors, which I've shown before, are ornate and have this synthesis of mudejar and Gothic architecture going on. I could even see some Mughal influence in the design. Just eye candy for people who like pretty buildings and lush, well designed, gardens.

The Church of Peace in Potsdam reflects the romantic idealism of the 19th century for me. Its design, inspired by Italian basilicas, symbolizes the longing for peace and beauty in turbulent times. When I enter, I feel the timeless connection between art, spirituality, and the dream of a better world.
