𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 Applications are now open for the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) grants, offering vital support to small businesses, community groups, charities and town and parish councils across the district’s rural areas.

Following two successful years supporting more than 40 innovative projects, Stroud District Council has secured a third year of REPF funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). A total of £120,261 is available for capital projects that enhance productivity, strengthen the rural economy, and support local communities.

Applications are invited from: • Micro and small businesses (all sectors) • Social enterprises and charities • Community groups • Town and parish councils

The funding will be distributed in two rounds, with application deadlines on 23 June 2025 for round one and 12 September 2025 for round two. All funds must be fully spent by 28 February 2026. In addition, £40,000 of UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) grants is available for capital projects anywhere in the Stroud district, following the same application process and eligibility criteria as REPF (excluding the rural location requirement). Grants of £5,000–£20,000 (with 60% match funding) or £5,000–£10,000 (no match funding) are available for projects that fall within the following categories: • Supporting micro and small enterprises • Growing the local social economy and innovation • Enhancing the visitor economy • Promoting arts, culture, heritage, and creative activities • Strengthening community infrastructure and civil society • Advancing rural circular economy initiatives • Supporting impactful volunteering and social action • Improving digital infrastructure for community facilities • Creating or enhancing rural green spaces • Promoting active travel in local areas

Andrew Cummings, SDC’s Deputy Chief Executive said:

Previous rounds of REPF funding have had a real and lasting impact on rural businesses and community organisations across the Stroud district. From funding new cycle storage at Horsley village shop, to solar panels at Teckels Animal Sanctuaries and supporting a white goods recycling initiative at Gloucestershire House Clearances in Chalford – these projects are great examples of how targeted investment can strengthen our local economy and communities.

I encourage all eligible organisations to apply and take advantage of this opportunity to bring their ideas to life and contribute to our thriving, resilient rural district.

All funding will be aligned with Stroud District Council’s priorities, including Environment & Climate Change, Support for Businesses, and Community Resilience and Wellbeing, which are outlined in the Council Plan and Economic Development Strategy. The Green Party candidate for the Stroud District Council by-election in Severn ward on June 11 is Moya Shannon.

Moya previously stood in the ward during last year’s SDC elections and gained more than half of the number of votes gained by either of the winning candidates. She believes that at her second attempt, with the Greens riding high after the recent County Council elections, she stands a very good chance of winning.

Moya has lived in Stroud district since 1990, mainly in Eastington, where her three children attended local schools.

She worked as an administrator for her family’s long-established oak frame carpentry company.

She was previously a teacher, and worked at two local secondary schools over a period of 27 years.

A lover of local heritage and historic buildings, she is involved with helping to raise money for the Eastington Church Roof Appeal. When her children were young, she was actively involved in the playgroup and Parent Teacher Association in Eastington.

If elected, Moya will campaign for small community-based electricity generation schemes and more solar on domestic, commercial and industrial roof spaces, to avoid the need for large-scale solar farms.

She will also campaign for better local transport links and cycle routes. She says:

I will also work to ensure that local developers are held to account, because building houses should be about building homes and not just about making profits. Housing needs to be affordable, sustainable, meet the needs of local people and provide a healthy environment to live in.

She believes that local farmers need more support in order to provide food security, help them produce food in a more sustainable way and mitigate against the effects of climate change.

She adds:

Severn ward is such a beautiful area and I feel very privileged to live here. I believe strongly that we need to protect the natural environment and way of life and that will be a priority for me if I am elected.

The by-election was called as the result of the untimely death in April of Cllr Richard Maisey, who had held the seat for Labour since May 2024. Moya says:

Richard was a popular and effective ward councillor and I hope I can prove to be an equally good councillor and be an effective voice for our community.

Every household in the district will soon receive our free annual newsletter filled with updates and information which benefit every resident.

SDC News, created by Stroud District Council, is published annually to keep residents informed about council services, current initiatives and projects.

Delivered to more than 54,000 homes and available digitally, it details how the new Council Plan priorities are driving improvements across the district.

This year’s edition includes information on our collaboration with partners to develop brownfield sites for new homes, updates on our new leisure service Active Lifestyles Stroud District, the recent restoration of the Anti-Slavery Arch in Paganhill and much more.

Stroud District Council’s new Council Plan, developed in collaboration with our communities focuses on five main priorities: Environment, Climate and Nature; Communities and Wellbeing; Local Economy; Housing and Working for our Communities.

SDC News costs approximately 28p per copy to produce and distribute, the same as last year, and is printed on carbon balanced paper by a local business.

Stroud District Council Chief Executive Kathy O’Leary said:

Reaching all our residents through the newsletter is an important part of our communication strategy, particularly for those without access to our social media channels or website.

Our annual independent survey of residents reveals that 68% of people are satisfied with how SDC operates, which is 15% above the national average. SDC News highlights the work we’re currently doing, and what’s on the horizon.

I hope you enjoy reading about some of the exciting projects we’re involved with.

This issue will be published and sent out to all residents of Stroud district from Monday 12 May.

I want to create a 11 theme based on 5. The problem is, that most of the themes available have a real overhead in theme settings. I don't want a base theme for my theme rather implement bootstrap directly. The only thing I need is a kind of package of suitable templates or so I don't have to write everything from scratch
Do you have any for me?

Thanks in advance 🙂

People cannot park outside the Co-Op with impunity any longer, causing great inconvenience to blue badge holders!

If you park there 'just for 5 minutes' you now risk a ticket. About time too.

I first reported the fallen sign in September 2020. This prevented Traffic Warden from issuing tickets.

Gloucester County Council have finally got around to replacing the statutory sign. Dozens of e-mails and chains that span pages and pages. It really does beggar belief.

Four and a half years!!

GCC strikes me as a completely dysfunctional organisation. So many headlines of racist and misogynistic behaviour. It is 75% male, many of pensionable age and little diversity. It is not politically correct to say that it's 'pale, male and stale' so I won't generalise, because I know some brilliantly effective and hard working councillors there (mostly female, btw). But I think the make up of the council is not representative of the community it purports to serve.

This tired Conservative administration has run its course, time is long overdue for change.

Please use your vote wisely on May 1st. ;)

LGR - Local Government Reorganisation.
An excellent discussion at Stroud District Council this evening. As a Green there is no party line, so we are free to contribute in the best interests of the residents and business who we represent.

I said what I thought needed to be said. The recommendation passed unanimously and I feel the wide ranging opinion will help shape and deliver the best possible outcome.

I acknowledge that our leaders do a remarkable job of keeping the whole council on track, despite the tough choices and strong opinion that many of us hold.
