A New Chapter: Starting at the University of Iowa SLIS as an Associate Professor of Practice

I’m excited to share some personal and professional news: I’ll be joining the University of Iowa’s School of Library and Information Science as an Associate Professor of Practice, starting full-time in Fall 2025.

This transition comes after a period of uncertainty. As many of you know, changes at the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), including restrictions on what staff can say, discuss, and share as well as the probable loss of funding, made it time to think seriously about what was next. Some of the updates I made to this site over the past year were a result of those restrictions clarifying that this space reflects MY work and intellectual efforts, not my role at NNLM, and ensuring I was ready to fully return to consulting if needed.

Now, I’m turning toward this new opportunity at Iowa SLIS with gratitude and a lot of anticipation. At the same time, I’m very aware that I’m entering another busy season. My calendar is packed through the summer, I have a few speaking gigs lined up, I have contracted to write a white paper for the Public Library Association on adult learning in public libraries, and I have a big project lined up for August that I’ll be announcing soon. (Stay turned!)  I’m also getting married in the fall (!).

When I started at NNLM, I gave myself space to focus and settle in, and I want to offer myself that same grace now, so I am pausing any consulting work for the fall. I want to feel comfortable and confident in my new role and give it the energy it deserves.

As for this blog? I’m still figuring that out. I know I’ll continue writing here, though maybe not in the same rhythm or format as before (I might go back to including a weekly post of interesting links and probably some shorter posts). This has always been a space to explore the work I care about, and that won’t change. I’ll be working with the leadership in SLIS and the Graduate College to figure out where the lines are around my work (I’d love to bring the wellbeing work into my scholarship there). But I’ll still be here, sharing, reflecting about aspects of workplace well-being.

Thanks for being part of this ongoing journey.

A welcome graphic from the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) announcing Bobbi Newman as a new Fall 2025 Associate Professor of Practice. The design features a circular portrait of Bobbi Newman with short red and gray hair, black-framed glasses, and red lipstick. She is smiling and wearing a dark collared shirt. The background has a mix of white, black, and yellow with bold, modern graphics. Text highlights her extensive experience in public, academic, and special libraries, her leadership in digital services, and her focus on empowering and supporting library professionals. The web address www.slis.uiowa.edu is included at the top.""

So apparently, Texas Woman's University has cut off all alumni email accounts WITH ZERO WARNING OR NOTIFICATION.

I have all my federal loan information going to that account.

EXTREMELY uncool TWU.

#SLIs, #SLOs, & #SLAs are easy to understand (at a high-level) but tricky to properly implement.

I wrote an in-depth guide on them with the intent of helping you get passed the hurdle of translating them from a concept to an actionable tool.
